The first Barbie movie has been a huge success at the box office, grossing over $380 million worldwide in just the first week. And unsurprisingly, this has led to speculation that a sequel could be in the works. Although it’s still too early to say for sure, many believe that an announcement about a sequel is certainly possible. However, the recent comments from the movie’s director Greta Gerwig might come as a disappointment to those who are still waiting for a confirmation on Barbie 2.

Greta Gerwig revealed her take on the Barbie sequel

Greta Gerwig said that she is open to the idea of a sequel. However, she shared that she would want to make sure that the sequel was “something special.”

“At this moment, it’s all I’ve got. I feel like that at the end of every movie, like I’ll never have another idea, and everything I’ve ever wanted to do, I did. I wouldn’t want to squash anybody else’s dream but for me, at this moment, I’m at totally zero.”

Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to make a sequel will come down to Warner Bros. and Mattel. If the studio sees the potential for a profitable franchise, then they will likely greenlight a sequel. However, if they don’t think that there is enough demand for a sequel, then they may choose to pass on it.

In one of her interviews, Gerwig said that the second installment might “start with her [Barbie] and Sylvester Stallone. You never know [if he’ll be in it] or that he’s going to direct it. I mean, he’s welcome to it. It would be an honor. It would be such an honor.”

The first installment of Barbie is currently streaming in theatres. Gerwig co-wrote the screenplay for Barbie with Noah Baumbach. Margot Robbie stars in the film alongside Ryan Gosling, America Ferrera, Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, Rhea Perlman, Simu Liu, and Will Ferrell. In the movie, Robbie’s Barbie (aka Stereotypical Barbie) sets out for the real world with Ken by her side only to find that they are both very unprepared for the harsh truths of what happens outside of Barbie Land.
