The 1952 novel The Borrowers by English children’s book author Mary Norton served as the basis for the film. The book tells the story of a family of tiny people who live covertly in the walls and floors of a typical home and must borrow goods from humans to survive.

Twelve-year-old Sho, portrayed by Holland, moves into the mansion while he waits for emergency medical attention in the city. As the two start to confide in one another, Arrietty and Sho forge an unexpected friendship that blossoms into something more.
