One reason fans have been so excited for Tony Todd to play Venom, is because of his deep, grim, baritone voice. He proved his voice acting skills in a number of projects, including when he played the title role of Dracula, in a 2016 audio adaption of Bram Stoker’s famous novel. Now, he is set to bring to life one of the most famous anti-heroes in Marvel history and he certainly has the qualifications to do it.

In a recent interview, Senior Creative Director at Insomniac Games, Bryan Intihar, discussed being nervous about casting the role and bringing the Spider-Man 2 villain to gaming. He told Entertainment Weekly casting the part was:

“One of the things I was avoiding for as long as possible, because I was so scared of who we were going to get to do the voice,”

However, later in the interview, Intihar discusses how Tony Todd entered the picture and fit the role in every way the team could have ever imagined. Todd brought emotion and depth to the character. As the creative director further explained:

“Everything we talked about [with] Venom — that sense of strength, that sense of fear, that sense of overwhelming, so different from Peter — Tony embraces that completely in the performance,”

Clearly, Tony Todd was meant for the part of Venom and fans can be excited to experience his take on the character in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. It is clear Insomniac took special care in ensuring the role went to the proper actor, which is why his upcoming performance is so promising.

If you’re unfamiliar with Venom, the character is an anti-hero symbiote from the planet Klyntar. He is easily one of the most popular Spider-Man villains and has a twisted sense of right and wrong. While he typically kills his victims, he also chooses to protect those he sees as innocent. Venom comes from a race of other symbioses and attaches himself to a host, influencing their actions. In many comic iterations, Venom takes control of Eddie Brock, Peter Parker, and/or Harry Osborn. Although it has been revealed Eddie Brock will be in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Insomniac has made it clear he will not be Venom. This appears to be in an effort to keep things fresh and prevent Spider-Man fans from guessing the plot of the game.
