Tom Cruise’s Top Gun sequel not only saved cinema by becoming the highest-grossing film of his career but also revitalized interest in aviation. Despite the success of the Top Gun franchise, no other aviation film released since the sequel has garnered the same positive responses from both audiences and critics, solidifying Top Gun’s unique standing in the genre and that’s why fans are still clamouring for a third movie even now.

In the opening scene of Top Gun: Maverick, Tom Cruise’s character takes off in a Darkstar hypersonic plane, reaching a record speed of Mach 10. A dark fan theory suggests that everything following this scene could be Maverick’s fantasy, as ejecting at Mach 10 is typically fatal.

While the film leaves some room for speculation with the possibility of a reinforced escape pod in the experimental Darkstar aircraft, the odds of surviving a crash at 10 times the speed of sound without serious injury are extremely low. Despite a dusty appearance after landing, Maverick appears to have no broken bones, which made fans believe that he did legitimately die.

While speaking to Josh Horowitz in a recent interview, Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski was asked about the dark fan theory that Maverick actually died at the very start of the movie and everything afterwards was a dream. Kosinski revealed that the theory was not true at all, adding that the original script had a sequence that would have automatically debunked that theory.

”No that wasn’t you know. Actually, we, the original verison of the script we acutally followed Maverick in his freefall back to earth, which would have debunked that theory. It was a pretty spectacular sequence, imagining what it’s like to re-enter from space in your space suit.

I love it, film is meant to be interpreted. I love that there is multiple ways to read it. Hopefully it’s a piece of art meant to be interpreted.”

Joseph Kosinski also made it clear he loved the fact that people were interpreting the movie in their own way, expressing his view that he hoped the film was seen as a piece of art that was meant to be interpreted. For the record, you can stream Top Gun: Maverick on Amazon Prime Video, MGM Plus Amazon Channel, Paramount Plus, Paramount Plus Apple TV Channel, Paramount+ Amazon Channel, MGM Plus Roku Premium Channel, MGM Plus.

Tom Cruise’s Hollywood career showcases a seasoned celebrity who has sustained superstardom by making intelligent movie choices and understanding roles that complement his strengths. His success is attributed to the strategic decision to reject roles that don’t align with his capabilities. Despite turning down iconic roles, Cruise’s career choices have strategically kept him relevant in the industry.

Roles in films like Ghost, Edward Scissorhands, Donnie Brasco, and A Beautiful Mind were offered to Cruise, but he opted out. Even in the superhero genre, Marvel considered him for Iron Man, a role that eventually went to Robert Downey Jr. instead.

Even when acknowledging that Robert Downey Jr. was perfect for certain roles he turned down, Tom Cruise made decisions that did not compromise his longstanding success. Despite passing on significant opportunities, Cruise has clearly showcased his intelligence and maintained a successful and enduring career in the film industry, showcasing his strategic acumen throughout his career.
