Just last week, an insider reported Death Stranding 2 will purportedly be released next year. There’s high expectation for an announcement during next month’s The Game Awards. The Game Awards will take place on the 7th of December, and as always will feature a host of new titles being announced along with this year’s best games being awarded. The first title, Death Stranding was announced during 2016’s E3 event, and The Game Awards now seems like the perfect platform to announce the long-awaited sequel.

The sequel was first announced and was said to be under development last year, during The Game Awards. With the mega event returning next year, there were already high hopes for a first look at the sequel during the event. The Game Awards will take place in less than a fortnight and Hideo Kojima’s latest post on X has all but confirmed the sequel will get teased at the event.

Kojima’s post was just captioned “MIX” and featured four pictures of an audio mixer, one of them with the Kojima Productions logo in the background. The official account for The Game Awards on X had earlier replied to Kojima’s post with an ‘eyes‘ emoji, but the reply has since been deleted. Kojima’s post and the reply by The Game Awards got the fans buzzing on X and on Reddit where a discussion post was posted for fans who have been sharing speculations and expectations.

A Wushu Studios Community Manager known only by his ID, Shinobi602, dropped a hint just last week when he replied to a fan’s post on the ResetEra forum. A comment on the forum speculated that Sony might not have any other AAA games for next year apart from Death Stranding 2 and Rise of the Ronin. Without dropping a confirmation of any sort, Shinobi responded by saying there are other titles, it’s only a question of whether all of them make it or not.

A teaser for the sequel was shown when the announcement was made last year, and no other news about the game’s development has emerged ever since. The teaser featured Léa Seydoux’s Fragile and Norman Reedus’ Sam Bridges.

Going by the announcement teaser in 2019 and Death Stranding‘s actual release in 2019, fans believe a similar timeline might be repeated for the sequel as well, even if it’s not a similarly longer wait this time around. With the game being under development for more than a year now, Kojima’s post has now renewed hope for a full trailer and a release date announcement next month, but fans aren’t holding their breath for a 2024 release as yet.

Last year’s announcement was accompanied by a four-minute-long teaser. The teaser shows Fragile holding on to a newborn baby, hiding from a bunch of armed members and later riding away with the baby, only to be shot down and lose the baby in the process.

The teaser then shows a BB pod similar to the ones seen in the first game following which the title is revealed and an older-looking, grey-haired Sam Bridges is shown walking towards Fragile. A ship with the name OHV Magellan is also shown being piloted by a mysterious figure. Fans have ever since been theorizing about the possibilities of the mysterious pilot inside the ship and who the newborn baby could be seen with Fragile.

The sequel looks all set to be a darker game compared to the original title going by last year’s teaser. The full trailer should reveal more about the game and the timeline in which the story will take place. If released in 2024, Death Stranding 2 could very well be a strong contender at The Game Awards next year.
