Patrick Dempsey, 57, told People in this week’s cover story that he’s glad “it’s happening at this point” in his life. “It’s nice to have the recognition, and certainly my ego takes a little bump, but it gives me the platform to use it for something positive,” he continued. The Maine Native told the magazine about his initial reaction when he heard of this news:

“I’ve always been the bridesmaid! I’d completely forgotten about it and never even contemplated being in this position. So my ego is good.”

When asked about how his kids (Talula, 21, and 16-year-old twins Sullivan and Darby) will respond, Dempsey said that they’re “just going to make fun of me and pick on me and figure out every reason why I shouldn’t be,” he says. “Which is good, they keep me young.”

The People edition with Dempsey’s cover story will be out Friday. Besides this, the actor also discussed Michael Mann–directed biopic Ferrari, where he’ll show off his racing chops.
