M. Night Shyamalan is one of the pioneer directors of our times, whose movies transcend our general perception. And among all his movies, the Unbreakable trilogy – Unbreakable (2000), Split (2017), and Glass (2019), are three movies that have weaved a story beyond comprehension. With intricate plot points and details, the trilogy is one of Shyamalan’s very best works to date.
Now, the director is back with yet another mystery thriller, Trap, which is set to release in August this year. The first trailer of the movie, starting Josh Hartnett, was recently released, and fans are already making up theories about what we can expect.
Is Trap Part of M. Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable Universe?
After the completion of the Unbreakable trilogy, Shyamalan said that he was open to continue the story forward if a good enough idea struck him. Later, though, he said that he did not want to continue the story and make it a cinematic universe, at least not anymore than what it already was. But now, with the release of Trap‘s first trailer, fans can’t help but speculate if the upcoming feature is the fourth movie in M. Night Shyamalan‘s Unbreakable universe.
And a fan theory on the upcoming movie might just make you think on it twice. A pretty popular theory on the internet is that the daughter in the movie Trap, played by Ariel Donoghue, is actually a vampire/ monster. The Unbreakable universe deals with the superhero theme as well as psychological horror, and having a monstrous teen living among the general population with a “Butcher” for a father definitely fits the bill.
If the daughter is a vampire or a similar monster, her father, played by Josh Hartnett, could just be helping her to survive by doing the killings. Or it could even be the daughter who is the butcher, and the father is just an accomplice, who is someone who will do anything for their kid, and helps her with the killings, and now needs to figure out how to get out of this trap unscathed.
Given Shyamalan’s penchant for the supernatural and the horror genre, this is a pretty good theory to move with. Although official sources are yet to confirm or deny if the upcoming movie is part of the Unbreakable universe or not, fans are free to guess.
Fans React to Trap Possibly Being Part of The Unbreakable Universe
Fans have been wanting a continuation of the Unbreakable trilogy for a long time, ever since the last movie in the storyline – Glass, was released. Given Bruce Willis’ FTD diagnosis and eventual retirement, things we’re looking din for the story to continue. But now with Trap in the picture, they see a possibility of it happening, and the excitement levels are through the roof. Fans are taking to their social media accounts to express what they think about Trap possibly being a part of M. Night Shyamalan’s best piece of work.
People are also hailing both Shyamalan as well as Josh Hartnett, who was recently seen in Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-winning movie, Oppenheimer. The actor had been absent from the movie scene for a while, but now that he is back, fans are overjoyed. And this duo of Shayamalan and Hartnett is getting all the praise.

My guess the twist in #TrapMovie will be the daughter is the killer, dad is a caring parent, and he's stressed because he doesn't want his daughter to go to jail. M put his own daughter in the film as the pop star. The whole thing is a study on father daughter relationships.
