The second part of Invincible Season 2 will premiere in March and Marvel fans were really looking forward to these last four episodes of the season. Mark Grayson’s new foe Angstrom Levy will have a more significant role in the upcoming episodes. Along with that, one new voice-casting in the series and the title of the upcoming eighth episode led many to believe that a crossover event between Invincible and Spider-Man would happen this season.
However, Robert Kirkman, the series creator, has revealed upsetting news for Marvel fans who were expecting this team-up. The crossover event happened in Marvel Comics in 2004’s Marvel Team-Up #14 when Mark Grayson traveled to 616 Marvel Universe and met Spider-Man.
Marvel Fans May Not Get To See Invincible And Spider-Man Team Up
Many fans believed that Invincible Season 2 Part 2 was setting up an epic Marvel-inspired crossover event between Mark Grayson and Spider-Man. Fans have been expecting other superheroes to appear in this wild Prime Video series for a long time now. The introduction of Sterling K. Brown-voiced Angstrom Levy as the villain in the second season excited fans since he was the one who opened multiversal portals in the comics.
Interestingly, Josh Keaton, who voiced Spider-Man in the animated project The Spectacular Spider-Man, was announced to join the cast of the series. Moreover, with the title reveal of the upcoming eighth episode, I Thought You Were Stronger, fans were almost sure that Spider-Man was coming to Amazon. However, showrunner Robert Kirkman may have shut down such speculations when he appeared for an interview during IGN Fan Fest.
Kirkman expressed his doubt on whether the studio could pull off the appearance of other brand’s heroes in Invincible. While Kirkman admitted that it was an amazing possibility, he shared that he wouldn’t count on it. Kirkman told IGN:
“Would that we could pull the powers of Amazon and Disney and Marvel and everybody together! Wouldn’t that be an amazing thing? But I wouldn’t count on it. And that’s not a tease.”
In the comics, Invincible has not only crossed paths with Spider-Man, but also with heroes like The Tick, Batman, and The Avengers. Kirkman also shared another disappointing update on the live-action Invincible movie. He shared that the film was “going through the pipeline slowly”, and joked that Steven Yeun could play Cecil Stedman by the time the film gets greenlit.
What Happens When Invincible Visits 616 Marvel Universe?
In the comics, Angstrom Levy throws Mark Grayson into other dimensions in Invincible #32. In Marvel Team-Up #14, Mark lands in his second dimension, the 616 Marvel Universe, where he interrupts a fight between Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus. They have a rocky start as the sarcastic Invincible even pokes fun at Spider-Man’s name, calling it lazy.
Mark interacts with other members of the Avengers and even makes some humorous remarks, including a jibe at Peter and Mary Jane’s relationship. The duo team takes down Octopus together thus having a great adventure together, before Mark gets pulled into another dimension. Invincible and Spider-Man surely had rapport in the comics which could have easily translated into the animated series.
It’s a shame that the crossover was a one-off event and neither Invincible nor Spider-Man made any references to their encounter in further storylines. Invincible Season 2 Part 2 is set to hit Amazon Prime Video on March 14, 2024. The series is renewed for a third season as well.
