Fans of the Marvel comics are well-acquainted with the pairing of Captain Marvel and War Machine; a couple that, many believe, would fail to sustain itself within the MCU narrative. Brie Larson’s embodiment of Carol Danvers has never once embraced a romantic sub-plot as its central focus. In fact, her cinematic narrative is symbolic of the spirit of friendship. That is not the case in the comics, where Carol has had quite a few love interests.

One such romance—shared between Carol Danvers and James Rhodes—has stood the test of time, becoming one of the primary love stories in the comics. While a comparatively new addition to the comic continuity, the relationship has faced its fair share of several highs and lows.
In the latest issue of the Infinity Comics anthological series, Love Unlimited, glimpses of the couple’s relationship will be shared with the readers as they enter a new, seemingly convoluted chapter in their romantic lives.
A New Story About Captain Marvel And War Machine’s Romance
Marvel Comics, through the Love Unlimited series, focuses on some of the most iconic characters of the franchise and their romantic endeavors. The series has offered readers tales that do not always entail a happy-ever-after but sometimes, resolve with an important lesson revolving around the various themes of love. Now, in Issue #55, the comic is set to bring to its audience a new story that features Carol Danvers and James Rhodes’ relationship—which seems to not be doing too well.
The official synopsis of the latest issue states the following:
“Captain Marvel and War Machine’s relationship has seen many ups and downs. But currently, this power couple is facing a major down, and it has left them in a major funk. Perhaps a lavish vacation across space can rekindle their love, or has this relationship finally burned out?”
There are various implications to the above summary. While the latest issue in the anthology may attempt at reigniting the love shared between the two characters, it might also conclude on a realistic, heartbreaking note—with Carol and Rhodey potentially breaking up. Surprisingly, the majority of Marvel comic readers are hoping for the latter.
Fans Express Distaste For The Marvel Couple
Fans of Marvel comics are not particularly fond of the romance that unraveled between War Machine and Captain Marvel, with many proclaiming their chemistry to be inorganic and forced. Some also believe that the romance has led to stagnancy in the couple’s growth as individuals. To many, however, it’s the nature of the relationship that they seem to have an issue with—it’s forgettable and bland.

Judging from the reactions, it can be ascertained that there are barely a few people who are willing to advocate for the characters’ romantic association. It can also be seen that there’s a general apprehension amongst the masses about the potential inclusion of this romantic subplot in the MCU. Although a valid concern, audiences must be reminded that the production team connected with 2019’s Captain Marvel has repeatedly affirmed that Carol Danvers’ story in the cinematic franchise did not have room for a romance sub-plot and might continue to not even in the future.
While several rumors and reports are detailing the involvement of Prince Yan (portrayed by Park Seo Joon) in MCU’s upcoming film The Marvels, a character who happens to be Carol’s “husband”, it is not certain as of yet what exactly the dynamic between the two would look like. What we can confirm though is that a romance between MCU Captain Marvel and War Machine is not currently on the table and even if it were, it would not make much sense in the cinematic timeline.
It’d be interesting to see if things change in the future, though.
