Cody Rhodes’ dream of winning the WWE Undisputed Universal Championship took a setback on the very first day of WrestleMania 40. Partnering with Seth Rollins for the tag team match on Night 1, against Roman Reigns and The Rock, Rhodes unfortunately came up on the losing side.
As per the conditions, if Roman Reigns and The Rock won on Day 1 of WrestleMania 40, Cody Rhodes will have to face Reigns on Day 2 in a Bloodline Rules match. This particularly means anything goes. It could be 2 on 1, 3 on 1, and even 5 on 1, and neither Rhodes nor Seth Rollins would be able to do anything about it.
The Rock and Roman Reigns Outlast Cody Rhodes
Previously, during the WrestleMania 39 main event, Cody Rhodes witnessed his defeat by Roman Reigns. Retaining the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion title, Reigns seemingly won the match following an interference by Solo Sikoa, who beat Rhodes with a Samoan spike during the climax of the match. Now, it seems history is repeating itself.
During the recent WrestleMania 40, Day 1 match, Cody Rhodes yet again faced a defeating blow from Roman Reigns. Facing The Tribal Chief and The Rock during the tag team match on Night 1, Rhodes partnered with Seth Rollins and unfortunately found himself on the losing end. Meanwhile, WWE fans on X seemingly found striking similarities between Rhodes’ reaction to his loss during WrestleMania 39 and WrestleMania 40.

However, all jokes aside, CBS Sports noted that Reigns and The Rock apparently pulled off the win by abusing the rules. According to reports, Rock, being a member of WWE owners’ TKO board of directors, had ordered the referee to not count anyone out. Having an upper hand in the match, Rock had once put Seth Rollins into a sharpshooter, which Cody Rhodes broke up with a big slap.
Further, Rhodes hit Roman Reigns with a shoulder tackle off the top rope followed by a rather shabby Rollins splash. Thereafter, Roman Reigns and The Rock locked Cody Rhodes in a guillotine, but Seth Rollins broke it up with a Stomp. Eventually, the biggest moment occurred when Reigns tagged in Rock, who landed the Rock Bottom and People’s Elbow for the final win.
Bloodline Rules on Sunday During Rhodes vs Reigns
Following Roman Reigns and The Rock’s victory over Cody Rhodes, it set the part for the next match between Reigns and Rhodes on Day 2 of WrestleMania 40. However, now when Rhodes challenges Reigns during the main event of Night 2, the match will be contested under Bloodline Rules.
Since Cody Rhodes lost to the team of Roman Reigns and The Rock, the next match means anything goes, including an expected plethora of run-ins from Reigns’ family, making it 2 on 1 or even 5 on 1, and no one can do anything about it. While it seems tense for Rhodes, fans of WWE are highly excited to see how it goes.
