During one of her interviews, Vergara revealed a shocking detail about her process, which required her to learn how to smoke and use cocaine for a convincing portrayal of the character. However, Vergara had to clarify her stance after making a hilarious goof-up. Sofia Vergara Reveals She Learned How to Do Cocaine For Griselda
In Griselda, Sofia Vergara plays the role of Griselda Blanco, a real-life drug lord from Colombia who dominated the underworld of Miami, Florida, in the 1980s. Blanco was known as the “Godmother of Cocaine.”
While promoting the series, Vergara appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. During the conversation with Fallon, she was asked about her portrayal of a drug queenpin.
“I didn’t know anything. He taught me how to smoke. He taught me how to do cocaine. He taught me a lot.”
Vergara made the above statement, revealing that director Andrés Baiz taught her the nuances of portraying a drug lord. She also explained that Baiz visited regularly and helped her prepare for the role.
Vergara added that Baiz told her about aspects of Blanco’s life that would help her onscreen portrayal. However, Vergara’s statement regarding cocaine use confused host Jimmy Fallon, who cross-questioned the Modern Family actress.
Sofia Vergara Clarified That She Used Fake Cocaine in the Series
In her zeal to talk about the role, Vergara further expressed how Baiz helped her prepare for the role right from teaching her to light a cigarette. She stated the following trying to highlight Baiz’s contribution to her performance in the role:
“I didn’t even know how to, you know, how to light a cigarette. I’ve never done cocaine. So it’s like, it was amazing. It was, like, a great experience.”
However, Vergara accidentally ended up confessing to getting high on cocaine, leading to further confusion from Fallon. When the crowd burst into laughter, Vergara quickly realized the error of her comments.
“The cocaine that I did was fake! It was not real cocaine. It’s fake cocaine, but I had to pretend. The cigarettes are also fake. Everything was, it’s fake.”
Ultimately, Vergara had to talk back on her initial comments and clarify the situation. However, the audience and Fallon had a great laugh at Vergara’s expense. Meanwhile, Vergara added that while the drugs used during filming were fake, the effort she spent in her performance was real.
Griselda is a crime-drama miniseries created by the team of Doug Miro, Eric Newman, Carlo Bernard, and Ingrid Escajeda. Vergara plays the titular role along with serving as a producer on the series. Griselda was released on January 25, 2024, and all six episodes are available to stream on Netflix.
