James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vo.3, released on May 5, came as the epic conclusion of the $1.6 billion Marvel franchise. As Gunn took no chances with his recent mischievous raccoon-centered story, the director also expressed a desire for a fourth film, of course by another director, under one specific condition. But again, it’s the Marvel fans who agree to disagree with the idea.

The Idea of Carrying Rocket’s Story As The New Leader

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ends with Star-Lord sacrificing the Captain mantle, anointing Rocket (Bradley Cooper’s voice) as the new leader of the Guardians. Ultimately, the very-much-alive Peter Quill, portrayed by Chris Pratt, returns to Earth, reuniting with his grandfather.

While the last installation, revolving around Rocket Raccoon’s tragic backstory, touches on some of the most unexpected dark themes and justifies James Gunn‘’s aim for an “epic conclusion”, the director still suggests he would “love” to see a fourth Guardians of the Galaxy movie by another filmmaker, “as long as “he/she bring themselves to it, and doesn’t just copy that style.”

Marvel fans, on the other hand, aren’t signing up for the idea of carrying Rocket Raccon’s story as the new leader of the Galaxy. One person tweeted, “After seeing the “New Guardians” at the end of the movie…I’m good. We don’t need that.”

One person, who sided with Gunn’s thoughts, was shut down by another fan who wrote: “Yeah but it had the same director, once you change director can it ever really feel like it’s the same?” Here are some of the other reactions:

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 also showcases a “New Guardian” in the end, a young girl with white hair (Kai Zen), who was rescued from the High Evolutionary’s lab. The post-credits refer to her as Phyla, a nod to the comic character, Phyla-Vell.

Making Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. Was A Herculean Task

As Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 comes as a big, emotional rollercoaster for Marvel fans, delivering a film like the “epic conclusion” wasn’t an easy task, especially after Marvel fired James Gunn and the director started working with the company’s top rival. But again, it was his loyal Marvel cast and crew, who fought to get him back in the game.

James Gunn had already signed up for The Suicide Squad when all this happened, and what happened next was witnessed by the entire galaxy. Even though the movie underperformed at the box office, grossing over $168 million against a budget of $185 million, it became the most-streamed DCEU film on HBO Max. Not only this, James Gunn was then hired to run a whole new DC era.

Gunn, who loves to work on backstories, was finally reinstated into making Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, while the second installation was already happening. On the question of picking Rocket Raccoon for the job, the director famously said:

“And as I mused upon it, I started thinking about how this was the saddest creature in the universe, and that was actually the seed to me for the entire Guardians trilogy.

That was my way into it, was this underpinning of just isolation and sadness and all of these characters are isolated and sad.

So I knew what Rocket’s backstory was from that moment; before I had come up with the rest of that stuff for Volume 1, it was the first thing I came up with.”

Even though he faced the pressure of carrying Adam Warlocks’ story (an opposing force), Gunn was more dedicated to working in sync with Peter Quill and Rocket’s story. As Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. kicked off the summer movie season, the final installment racked up $48.2 million in the beginning week in 4,450 theatres, with a weekend estimate of $144 million. Overseas, the movie has grossed another $168.1 million as of now.
