The 2019 Brie Larson-helmed Marvel movie was the first ever MCU movie directed by a woman. With Anna Boden in the front seat of the project, the movie was very well received and Boden was praised for her creative input.
Well, this wouldn’t have been the case if Ava DuVernay hadn’t rejected the 2018 film, Black Panther. With rumors and speculations that circulated during that time, DuVernay was quite excited to work in the MCU. She later backed out of the project because she had creative differences with other people in the movie.
Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel Wouldn’t Have Been The First
Captain Marvel turned out for the better with Anna Boden in the directing seat. This wouldn’t have been the case so if notable director Ava DuVernay hadn’t refused to direct the Chadwick Boseman starrer, Black Panther.
Talking about the speculations and her reasons for leaving the MCU project, DuVernay stated that she wasn’t able to see eye to eye with other people involved in the project. Although she valued the project very dearly, DuVernay told IndieWire that she couldn’t get over the creative differences and just take on the project to create like she was told to do by the majority of people.
“…We just didn’t see eye to eye. Better for me to realize that now than cite creative differences later”
She further continued,
“At one point, the answer was yes, because I thought there was value in putting that kind of imagery into the culture in a worldwide, huge way, in a certain way: excitement, action, fun, all those things, and yet still be focused on a black man as a hero — that would be pretty revolutionary,”
Comparing the making of the MCU movie as a sacred bond of marriage, Ava DuVernay stated that she thinks of her projects like her children and if she just did what she was told to do, then it wouldn’t be an Ava DuVernay film anymore.

During the course of the interview, the Selma director revealed that her name means something to the projects that she creates. Although she knew that the opportunity was too good to pass up, the report by IndieWire reported about how Ava DuVernay stated that it wouldn’t be her film.
“What my name is on means something to me — these are my children. This is my art. This is what will live on after I’m gone. So it’s important to me that that be true to who I was in this moment. And if there’s too much compromise, it really wasn’t going to be an Ava DuVernay film.”
Fortunately for Anna Boden, the director took up the directing seat, and Brie Larson was cast as Captain Marvel in the 2019 movie. Brie Larson is also slated to reprise her role in the upcoming sequel titled The Marvels. The 2019 Brie Larson starrer is currently available to stream on Disney+ in the U.S.
