Teen Titans’ Co-Creator Wanted to Share a Different Side of Robin

Introduced in Detective Comics #38 as Dick Greyson, Robin has long been perceived as Batman’s loyal sidekick. However, when the showrunners decided to incorporate the character in Teen Titans, a show where they wanted to focus on “characters that hadn’t been seen before,” they decided to reinvent the character.

The show’s co-creator Glen Murakami shared that it was a conscious choice to present a Robin distinct from the conventional portrayal. “We definitely wanted to show the audience a different Robin than they thought they were going to see,” he shared in an interview with Animation World Network. He further stated,

“It’s like taking Batman and putting him out of your mind: How would you portray Robin? We made him confident and really kind of cool. A lot of people say, Well, Robin has no superpowers. I dont think that matters.”

The decision to focus on Robin’s individuality, rather than his lack of superpowers, added depth to the character and highlighted his importance within the superhero team. With a diverse lineup including an alien, a robot, a shape-changer, and a witch, Teen Titans achieved an iconic balance, redefining the dynamics of superhero narratives.

Speculation about a Teen Titans movie has circulated for some time. Although there has been no official statement from the head of DC Studios regarding the film, Gunn seemed to have indirectly addressed the film with a cryptic response to rumors surrounding the new DCU projects.

“AT LEAST one of those things is not true. Have fun guessing!” he commented on a Threads post speculating the potential development in the DC Universe. Earlier, a live-action TV series titled Titans had been developed, spanning four seasons before it was canceled reportedly due to the ongoing restructuring of DC.

Teen Titans and Titans are available to stream on Max.
