While the comic book world is filled to the brim with superheroes that capture the imagination of every single reader, there are only a select few that were able to make cultural shifts to the fabric of its fandom. Spider-Man is one of the most prominent names in pop culture and is also rightfully considered to be one of the top 3 most popular superheroes in the world.

While the influence of this specific character was widespread before, what helped it to gain global recognition on such a tremendous scale are the live-action adaptations of the storylines from the comics. Now, there may be quite a few iterations of the web-slinger, but Kirsten Dunst believes that the original trilogy was the best, and the rest that came after were nothing in comparison.

There are so many superheroes in the fictional world of comic books that it’s hard to keep count, but still, Spider-Man will remain one of the most prominent figures in pop culture for generations to come. The surge in popularity of this character started in 2002 when director Sam Raimi introduced us to the live-action version of the friendly-neighborhood web-slinger, who was played by Tobey Maguire. Thus, even when the franchise came to an end, Kirsten Dunst, who played Mary Jane in the series, calls the original trilogy the best.

In an interview in the past, Dunst was rumored to have been dating her on-screen love interest in real life as well, which reportedly didn’t last long as both Maguire and the actress were officially just friends in 2007. Here, she was also asked about what her thoughts were about the new iteration of Spider-man by Marvel Studios with Tom Holland as the titular superhero. Here, she said that while this was good news, the new versions could never compare to the original. She said:

“We made the best ones, so who cares? I’m like, ‘You make it all you want.’ They’re just milking that cow for money. It’s so obvious. You know what I mean?”

This might be a statement that can be considered controversial, especially when considering the fact the original series was canceled for a 4th installment, which leads many to believe that this is just her way of venting out her frustration.

While most superheroes are depicted to be larger than life and in a world of their own, what makes Spider-Man so unique is the sense of relativity that the character brings to the table. Many of these superpowered entities are always put in situations that common folks can’t even begin to comprehend, But Spider-Man is able to instill the emotions of these situations deep into the heart of the public.

While many superheroes might have a Batcave or a Fortress of Solitude, Peter Parker is just a common teenager who lives a normal life, struggling to keep both of his personas in constant balance while the world tries everything in its power to break him from the inside out. This struggle is what every reader can connect to on a deeper level, which in turn, makes the character such a heart-touching hero to get behind.
