Helldivers 2 has grown the name of this newfound franchise exponentially. Fans cannot stop playing this game, and newcomers cannot stop fawning over its marvelous gameplay mechanics. On the surface, it’s just a sci-fi co-op third-person shooter, but underneath, it’s a constantly evolving game based on a galactic war of mammoth proportions.
The dynamism of it all is what’s keeping its players from moving away. The game keeps on evolving, and its lore keeps on developing right in front of the eyes of its fans. And now, after reaching these blinding heights of success, many people have started comparing it with another sci-fi shooter franchise, and its developers don’t seem to mind the comparison.
Helldivers 2’s Halo comparison does not affect its creative director in the least
The basic structure of Helldivers 2 goes this way: players get an assignment that asks them to go and liberate a certain planet. These planets are usually taken over by a bunch of robots or hostile armored insect species. Players as a whole, which means the combined player base of this game now attempts to take over that particular planet.
They sometimes lose, sometimes succeed, and this game continues. Thanks to the input of its game master, Joel, things stay interesting in Helldivers 2. He actually decides how difficult the game gets and how many enemies the players fight against. Many fans have found this addition to the game exciting, while others cannot help but wonder if this is a way to make this game too hard.
This opinion started surfacing when players lost a location called Malevelon Creek to Automatons, the robot faction of Helldivers 2. Fans did not wait for a second to start comparing this loss to one of Reach in Halo.
But this comparison quickly took an ugly turn, and fans started making these games a point of argument in console wars. They started telling people how Helldivers 2 is much better than Halo.
Arrowhead Game Studios has no doubt made an exciting game, and it’s a moment worth being proud of as their game gets compared to a franchise like Halo. But bringing console war into this thing is not doing anyone any favors. It appears the CEO of Arrowhead Studios and Helldivers 2’s creative director, Johan Pilestedt, shares this opinion too.
He was quick to catch a tweet trying to show down Halo fans and said, “Why compare? Just let gamers love and enjoy both, either or neither. We need more compassion and union in the world and less rivalry.”
But one must say, Xbox users are not at a very high point right now. The last Halo game, Infinite, did not do very well at launch. And many Xbox owners even started a petition asking the developers to bring Helldivers 2 to Xbox. Maybe this is why they are becoming targets of such tweets.
At the end of the day, the chances of Helldivers 2 ever making its way to the Xbox console are slim, as the game might be developed by Arrowhead Game Studios and published by Sony. Sony has been working hard to find a successful live service IP of their own, now that they have one, they will not let it go so easily.
Helldivers 2 coming to Xbox consoles would be good for everyone
Every online live-service game thrives on its player base. The more gamers play it, the more successful it is considered. And no doubt the player base of Helldivers 2 is pretty healthy. Heck, it keeps going up with every passing moment.
But if it is released for Xbox, there are chances that its player base would nearly double in size, and it would only contribute to this game’s prolonged life cycle. Then again, the decision is all on Sony.
