The fans of the film industry seem to be divided when it comes to the topic of Simu Liu. While some absolutely adore him and his hilarious personality, others cannot seem to get over his Reddit controversy from back in 2021.

In September 2021, people found an old Reddit account, “/u/nippedinthebud, and were fully convinced that it belonged to none other than the Kim’s Convenience actor.

Of course, there were no confirmations regarding the owner of the Reddit account, but the signs did point in the direction. For starters, one post shared by the account (via TMZ) starts off with, “Hey guys it’s Simu” and in another post, the man behind the username revealed that he was a Canadian actor. Needless to say, fans were convinced that the account belonged to Liu.

After turning 35, Liu took time out to share a heartfelt message accepting his past mistakes (which may or may not be the Reddit account) and thanked his fans for seeing who he is today and not years ago.

Liu jokingly started off the tweet by stating that he’s now 35, his career is doing well, and he hasn’t had to resort to selling NFTS, which is a win on its own. He then proceeds to get a bit more real, directly addressing his supporters.

The Canadian actor also sat down to reply to a ton of birthday wishes including one which says that Taylor Swift gave the best gift to Liu on his birthday.

Back in 2021, Liu made history by being the first AAPI superhero to become a lead in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings saw Liu play the titular character, a feat he has always been proud of. Upon the premiere of the film, Liu logged onto his Instagram and wrote down a lengthy message expressing his emotions.

He wrote (via PEOPLE),

“The sun rose today to a world where Asian superheroes exist as the leads of their story; that is the gift that [director Destin Daniel Cretton] and @marvelstudios has bestowed upon all of us, across all communities, everywhere. A celebration and a sharing of culture, of language, of laughter, of excitement, of sorrow and of heartbreak”

After thanking the director and his co-stars, Liu stated,

“I’ve said before that this film will change the world. A smile where there wasn’t one before. Pride where there was shame. Compassion where there was ignorance. If we reach out and touch even one person, then aren’t all of our lives better for it?”

He concluded the post by thanking the supporters and letting them know that they played a part in making history. He said, “Thank you all for your support. Today, finally, we make history.” Clearly, Liu has quite a sentimental attachment to his first film in the MCU. We cannot wait to see where the story takes Shang-Chi next!
