James Wan’s horror film M3GAN became a massive hit among fans, with the AI-developed doll opening the conversation about the wonders and dangers of artificial intelligence technology. Ever since its worldwide release, AI-generated content has changed and evolved, and this is what excites the director.
M3GAN indeed emerged as a box office success, giving Wan a chance to produce a sequel that would fully dig in and explore more of its story. Of course, the director assured fans that it would tackle the controversial artificial intelligence technology and other similar platforms like Chat GPT that might terrify President Joe Biden even more.
James Wan Plans To Explore More Of Artificial Intelligence In M3GAN Sequel
Speaking with Empire magazine, director James Wan revealed it is too early to divulge anything about the planned M3GAN sequel, but he admitted to leaning more into the future of artificial intelligence technology in the movie. Wan said (via Collider):
“It’s early yet, but M3GAN is coming back in a big way. The first film came just at the right time [when concerns about AI were mounting], and we’re definitely leaning into that on the next one. We’re exploring the AI universe even further.”
Actors and filmmakers have expressed their concerns pertaining to the dominance of AI technology in the film industry which could be detrimental to their livelihood. The said technology was also tackled in Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1, which reportedly greatly alarmed President Joe Biden.
According to Associated Press, the president saw the movie which focuses on a sentient AI that hijacks and sinks a submarine. White House Chief of Staff Bruce Reed told the outlet:
“If he hadn’t already been concerned about what could go wrong with AI before that movie, he saw plenty more to worry about.”
Reed also shared that Biden has seen fake images of him and his family online, which added to the president’s distress. The chief further added:
“He saw fake AI images of himself, of his dog. He saw how it can make bad poetry. And he’s seen and heard the incredible and terrifying technology of voice cloning, which can take three seconds of your voice and turn it into an entire fake conversation.”
Biden signed an executive order last Monday on the “safe, secure, and trustworthy development and use of artificial intelligence.” The order also stated:
“…ensure that America leads the way in seizing the promise and managing the risks of artificial intelligence.”
The executive order also mandates AI companies to test their products beforehand and share the results with the government before releasing them to the public.
M3GAN Producer Revealed James Wan Has 7 Ideas For Upcoming Sequel
James Wan previously spoke with SYFY WIRE and shared some of his plans for the M3GAN franchise. The director noted the use of technology:
“With the way the world is changing, and how technology is playing such a big part of our everyday life and how addicted we are to technology, it just felt right that M3GAN be a product of that world.”
Producer Jason Blum also revealed via Empire that Wan has several ideas for the upcoming sequel. In fact, he has seven unique concepts to play with:
“He’s an idea machine, and as we were winding up the movie he had about seven different ideas of what the sequel could be.”
Blum noted it would take time for them to finish the script because they do not want to compromise the quality. Indeed, a story that challenges the concept of AI technology will definitely need an ample amount of discussion.
