James Wan Plans To Explore More Of Artificial Intelligence In M3GAN Sequel

Speaking with Empire magazine, director James Wan revealed it is too early to divulge anything about the planned M3GAN sequel, but he admitted to leaning more into the future of artificial intelligence technology in the movie. Wan said (via Collider):

It’s early yet, but M3GAN is coming back in a big way. The first film came just at the right time [when concerns about AI were mounting], and we’re definitely leaning into that on the next one. We’re exploring the AI universe even further.”

According to Associated Press, the president saw the movie which focuses on a sentient AI that hijacks and sinks a submarine. White House Chief of Staff Bruce Reed told the outlet:

If he hadn’t already been concerned about what could go wrong with AI before that movie, he saw plenty more to worry about.”

Reed also shared that Biden has seen fake images of him and his family online, which added to the president’s distress. The chief further added:

He saw fake AI images of himself, of his dog. He saw how it can make bad poetry. And he’s seen and heard the incredible and terrifying technology of voice cloning, which can take three seconds of your voice and turn it into an entire fake conversation.”

Biden signed an executive order last Monday on the “safe, secure, and trustworthy development and use of artificial intelligence.” The order also stated:

James Wan previously spoke with SYFY WIRE and shared some of his plans for the M3GAN franchise. The director noted the use of technology:

With the way the world is changing, and how technology is playing such a big part of our everyday life and how addicted we are to technology, it just felt right that M3GAN be a product of that world.”

Producer Jason Blum also revealed via Empire that Wan has several ideas for the upcoming sequel. In fact, he has seven unique concepts to play with:

He’s an idea machine, and as we were winding up the movie he had about seven different ideas of what the sequel could be.”
