Among the various phases of Marvel that saw a number of films and television shows being released over the years, the 2021 animated series What If..? gained a lot of praise and critical acclaim. The American anthology series created by A. C. Bradley for the streaming service Disney+, is based on the Marvel Comics series of the same name. It explored alternate timelines in the multiverse that deals with different twists in the major moments from the MCU films.
The unique feature of the series was the fact that a lot of MCU actors like Benedict Cumberbatch, Hayley Atwell, Sebastian Stan, Elizabeth Olsen and others, lent their voices to their original Marvel characters. Now, with Season 2 streaming this holiday season, many of the Marvel alums are back to regale audiences once again.
These MCU Superstars Are Back For What If..? Season 2
Among a lot of lukewarm shows and films that the MCU produced over the past few years, the animated series What If…? stands out as one of the exceptions. Apart from being globally appreciated, the show also had a lot of original MCU actors lending their voices for their iconic Marvel characters. Many of them are now back for season 2 which is currently streaming on Disney+.
Hayley Atwell and Chris Hemsworth are back to voice Captain Peggy Carter and Thor in the series, while Benedict Cumberbatch’s unique baritone which is synonymous with Dr Strange, will be one of the roles that audiences look forward to. Apart from these MCU stars, Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes who was a pivotal character in the Captain America series, will feature in this season as well.
Elizabeth Olsen who made Wanda Maximoff aka Scarlet Witch her own, will play the animated version of her character in the second installment of What if…? Veteran actor Michael Douglas as Hank Pym and Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan complete the Marvel actors’ lineup for the series.
What Can MCU Fans Expect From What If…? Season 2?
The animated series What If…? introduced fans to an interesting concept of alternative multiverses and events in the MCU. The show dives into what could occur of if Doctor Strange had lost his heart instead of his hands, or the result of King T’Challa becoming Star-Lord instead of Peter Quill. These anthology-based storylines consisting of standalone episodes, made the show hugely popular with audiences.
While season 2 is officially streaming on Disney+, series head writer A.C. Bradley gave a few hints before the release, about what fans could expect with the new set of episodes. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Bradley promised another exciting experience and said,
“Going into the second season, we’re sticking with anthology form, and it’s going to be all-new stories, lots of fun, new heroes, and pulling more from Phase Four than we were obviously able to this season.”
Bradley also revealed that the new season will focus more on personal, character-driven narratives that will showcase a different side to Marvel’s iconic superheroes.
