It’s another victory lap for Elton John as he was recently named the newest recipient of EGOT, an acronym for Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony. This type of recognition is known as the grand slam of all awards, and only a handful of public figures have made the list.
The term was coined by actor Philip Michael Thomas in 1984, though he never really won any of these prestigious titles. At the recent 75th Emmy Awards, the famed musician adds himself to the roster of EGOT awardees.
Elton John Is Officially An EGOT Awardee
Elton John won an Emmy for Outstanding Live Variety Special for Disney+’s Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger Stadium. He was not present at the event to receive his award as he was still recovering from knee surgery, but producer Ben Winston was there to cover for him (via E! News):
“He’s absolutely fine, but he wanted to send his love and thanks to the Television Academy for this incredible award. We did know this was going to be historic because it was going to win a man who has created the soundtrack to all of our lives. He’s done so much great for society, who is all of our heroes. We didn’t know that it was going to win him an EGOT.”
The Rocket Man singer reacted to his win and could not hide his delight at this once-in-a-lifetime achievement:
“I am incredibly humbled to be joining the unbelievably talented group of EGOT winners tonight. The journey to this moment has been filled with passion, dedication, and the unwavering support of my fans all around the world.”
He also added that the event was “a testament to the power of the arts” and he was incredibly grateful for all the people who supported his musical career.
The iconic rock star’s EGOT journey began in 1987 after he won a Grammy for Record of the Year and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. In 1994, he won an Oscar for Best Original Song for Can You Feel the Love Tonight. In 2000, he earned a Tony Award for Best Original Score for the Broadway musical Aida.
Taylor Swift, Adele Among Other Stars Who Are Contending For EGOT Status
Many hopeful artists are also vying for the coveted title, and some of them are already halfway there. Famous icons like Taylor Swift and Adele only need to push a little further, and they will finally claim the EGOT status.
The country-pop singer won an Emmy for Original Interactive Program for her AMEX Unstaged: Taylor Swift Experience and several Grammys for many of her hit albums. She only needs an Oscar and a Tony now, which fans can look forward to in the future.
Adele, on the other hand, has an Emmy for Adele: One Night Only, an Oscar for Best Original Song (Skyfall), and several Grammys for her hit songs. The English singer-songwriter just needs a Tony to finally join the league of EGOT recipients.
Now, this leaves fans wondering who will be the next EGOT star for the next awards ceremony, and that’s definitely enough to keep them tuned in.
