It’s been nearly a year since FromSoftware announced the Elden Ring DLC Shadow of the Erdtree and players have been waiting to hear more about the game but the developer has been tight-lipped. The expansion was announced with an artwork that raised several questions about the expansion such as its setting and timeline.

Players have multiple theories about when Shadow of the Erdtree is set in the Elden Ring timeline. Although the cover art for the expansion does not reveal much, players think some clues hint at the expansion’s story and setting with the majority of fans saying it is either set in the future, after the events of Elden Ring, or in the past.

Shadow of the Erdtree artwork shows the Erdtree, possibly a Torrent, and a mysterious figure with long blonde hair riding it in a field with ruins in the background. There are several questions such as if it actually is the Torrent and who is riding it. While there are many names, the most prominent one is Miquella, the elder twin brother of Malenia.

Fans think it is Miquella as the appearance of the character is similar to the one when he is shown in the game’s intro cinematic such as the braids and the gown. However, Miquella is in his cocoon when players find him in the game, and does not look like he is shown in the artwork. This hints that the Elden Ring DLC might be set in the Lands Between’s past when Miquella wasn’t decayed.

Fans also believe that Shadow of the Erdtree could be set in Miquella's dreams.

There are also theories that Shadow of the Erdtree expansion could also be set after the events of Elden Ring, especially with the state Erdtree is shown in. The Erdtree in the artwork does not look healthy, it is blackened with ash falling from its branches and a golden liquid coming out from the trunk.

It is important to know that at the end of Elden Ring, players need to burn the Erdtree so this suggests that the Erdtree is burning and Shadow of the Erdtree is set after the events in the game.

But that’s not all as one famous theory that has got some serious consideration is that the expansion might be set inside the dream of Miquella so it could be any three of them but it is hard to point out when exactly is the DLC set.

Elden Ring DLC was expected to release this month, around the game’s second anniversary in February 2024 but the parent company of FromSoftware said that the DLC does not have a release date yet and the developers are “working hard” on it.

This means that fans might need to wait for more for Shadow of the Erdtree than they expected but many are still optimistic that there might be some information coming on the expansion on the game’s second anniversary but it is advised to not believe anything until there is an official announcement from the developer.
