There is never a dull moment when Twitter CEO Elon Musk decides to express his views on social media. The billionaire businessman is famously known for his maverick take on any subject, from films to pop culture to technology. Musk’s opinions though have more often than not sparked controversies and given rise to heated debates online.
The Twitter head is back in the line of fire with his latest comments on billionaire philanthropist George Soros. Musk’s comparison of Soros to a prominent X-Men character has been received with criticism for its sensitive political insinuations that allude to a disturbing period in world history.
Elon Musk Compared George Soros To X-Men Villain
Hungarian-American philanthropist George Soros was the subject of a brutal takedown by fellow billionaire Elon Musk. The Twitter CEO, who controversially claimed that Soros hated all humanity, went on to compare him to the popular X-Men character Magneto, an anti-hero created by the horrors of the holocaust. Soros, who is Jewish and a holocaust survivor himself, has consistently been a target of conspiracy theories and many false allegations that were created as a result of his lineage.
Following the backlash that he received from the Anti-Defamation League for his posts on Soros, Musk took to Twitter in what seemed like a genuine apology but turned out to be an even bigger roast of the Hungarian billionaire. Musk said,
“I would like to apologize for the post. It was really unfair to Magneto.”
With Musk’s appointment as Twitter CEO in 2022, these kinds of anti-semitic trends in narratives and comments have seen a constant rise on social media.
Elon Musk Faced Backlash For Controversial Comments
After sparking political controversy with his opinions on George Soros, Twitter CEO Elon Musk was schooled in no uncertain terms by the Anti-Defamation League. In response to the tweets, ADL’s chief executive, Jonathan Greenblatt had harsh words of caution for Musk for his remarks against Soros. Greenblatt in a statement, said,
“To see Elon Musk, regardless of his intent, feed this segment — comparing him to a Jewish supervillain, claiming Soros ‘hates humanity’ — is not just distressing, it’s dangerous. It will embolden extremists who already contrive anti-Jewish conspiracies and have tried to attack Soros and Jewish communities as a result.”
Musk though was unmoved in his stance following Greenblatt’s firm rebuttal and stated that he was at complete liberty to state his opinion on any issue concerning the world. The Twitter head added that he was unconcerned about drawing the ire of Tesla customers or Twitter advertisers despite his controversial comments. Soros, meanwhile, has not yet responded to Musk but instead sent a note to many of his online haters who wished him dead with the statement that he was alive and healthy.
