Evolving from a child actor to an indomitable leading actor in Hollywood, with his intense performance, Christian Bale appears to be a hallmark of quality stars in the industry of vanity. Often being notoriously dismissive of his celebrity life, Bale confesses his love-hate relationship with his stagecraft.
However, despite being known for his intense performances that feel bone-deep, even the Oscar-winning actor, Christian Bale, faced criticism in the industry. Irrespective of rendering quality stagecraft, Bale was criticized for his performance in American Psycho. And surprisingly enough, the majority of the critics were his co-stars, who called him out behind his back.
Actors Criticized Christian Bale Behind His Back
Although Christian Bale is known for his gripping onscreen performance, the actor wasn’t always viewed in a positive light. While his audiences have always been supportive of his stagecraft, his co-stars weren’t always satisfied. And it was his notable performance in American Psycho that not only gained him global fame but also his fellow actor’s criticism.
Called out behind his back for his acting in American Psycho, Christian Bale‘s castmate Josh Lucas opened his eye. Reuniting with Lucas in 2019 for Matt Damon’s film Ford v Ferrari, Bale was informed about the backstabbing criticism he faced for his performance in his 2000s horror thriller.
“Josh Lucas and I did a film together recently and he opened my eyes to something that I had been unaware of. He informed me that all of the other actors thought that I was the worst actor they’d ever seen.” Bale mentioned.
Bale further revealed every bit of criticism he learned from Josh Lucas. “He was telling me they kept looking at me and talking about me, saying, ‘Why did Mary fight for this guy? He’s terrible.’” the Oscar-winning actor stated. While Bale’s audiences found his acting quite riveting, his performance wasn’t quite comfortable for his co-stars.
Christian Bale Was Called Out For His Method Acting
For his performance in American Psycho, Christian Bale was also called out by his fellow castmates for his method acting. While confessing about the criticisms he learned from Josh Lucas, his American Psycho co-star Chloë Sevigny offered Bale a piece of her mind over his method acting.
“Working with Christian was pretty hard because I didn’t know this whole Method thing,” Sevigny mentioned.
The actress further detailed the problems she faced during her tenure with Bale on the set of American Psycho. Claiming to be a newbie in the film industry who wasn’t quite aware of method acting, Chloë Sevigny mentioned being disturbed by Bale’s way of being consumed by his part.
Bale’s co-star, Guinevere Turner mentioned,
“He was just so 100 percent committed as an actor to being this character, to a disturbing point. He never spoke in his real accent and he never socialized with anyone while we were shooting.”
However, despite facing criticisms for being consumed by his acting, Christian Bale rendered the most epic performance in his 2000 thriller American Psycho. Risking his sanity, the actor delivered his stagecraft in the most authentic form and won many accolades.
