In December 2022, actor Will Ferrell appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live and revealed that he held onto the underwear he wore while filming Elf. The actor pulled out the underwear he wore with the elf outfit out of his pocket and said,

“I held on to the underwear,” adding, “I wore these all 72 days of the shoot and it was not a good choice, they would bunch up a lot, I’m not gonna lie to you but yeah, I went with a woman’s thong.”

The principal photography for Elf (2003) began on December 9, 2002, and wrapped on March 7, 2003. The filming took place in New York City, as well as in Vancouver and at Riverview Hospital in Coquitlam, British Columbia.

The costume was created by Carelli Costumes in New York and sold for 10 times more than the expected price. In the interview with Kimmel, Ferrell joked that he could have the underwear “hand-delivered” if the buyer revealed himself. After the sale, the buyer chose to remain anonymous.
