In the movie, Ferrell plays the role of Buddy, a human raised by Santa’s elves, who learns about his origins and heads to New York City to meet his biological father. Ferrell wore an iconic elf outfit in the movie that fetched $300,000 at an auction, however, Ferrell says that the costume is incomplete because of this one thing that he kept: the underwear. The actor revealed that he couldn’t let go of it because he wore it every day while shooting the movie.

In December 2022, actor Will Ferrell appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live and revealed that he held onto the underwear he wore while filming Elf. The actor pulled out the underwear he wore with the elf outfit out of his pocket and said,
“I held on to the underwear,” adding, “I wore these all 72 days of the shoot and it was not a good choice, they would bunch up a lot, I’m not gonna lie to you but yeah, I went with a woman’s thong.”
The principal photography for Elf (2003) began on December 9, 2002, and wrapped on March 7, 2003. The filming took place in New York City, as well as in Vancouver and at Riverview Hospital in Coquitlam, British Columbia.

In 2021, Will Ferrell’s iconic elf costume he wore in Elf was sold for $300,000 at auction in the United Kingdom. The costume was created by Carelli Costumes in New York and sold for 10 times more than the expected price. In the interview with Kimmel, Ferrell joked that he could have the underwear “hand-delivered” if the buyer revealed himself. After the sale, the buyer chose to remain anonymous.
At the end of its theatrical run, Elf garnered roughly $220 million at the global box office against a $33 million budget. It is considered a modern classic that is still cherished by many cinephiles. The film also played a key role in solidifying Ferrell as a legendary actor in the entertainment industry.
