The Paramount+ series Lawmen: Bass Reeves is based on the nonfiction books Follow the Angels, Follow the Doves: The Bass Reeves Trilogy, Book One, and Hell on the Border: The Bass Reeves Trilogy, Book Two, by Sidney Thompson. This is an inherently thought-provoking story starring the excellent David Oyelowo, who plays the titular character.

When it comes to most Westerns made in the ‘Golden Age’ of the genre, even today, they refuse to tell the story of one of the first black men in law enforcement at the time. Besides Mr. Oyelowo, Lawmen Bass Reeves boasts an impressive cast, including Dennis Quaid, Lauren E. Banks, Barry Pepper, Forrest Goodluck, Shea Whigham, and Donald Sutherland.

Lawmen Bass Reeves has not yet been renewed for a second season. However, the series was created by Chad Feehan and acclaimed writer Taylor Sheridan, the genius behind the Paramount+ series Yellowstone, 1883, 1923, Mayor of Kingstown, Special Ops: Lionness, and the upcoming 1944 starring Matthew McConaughey.

If anyone can push a second season into production, it’s Sheridan, and the numbers are hard to ignore. Lawmen Bass Reeves has an impressive 81% critical rating and 96% audience approval rating on the website Rotten Tomatoes. The series also opened to jaw-dropping streaming ratings, pulling in over 7.5 million viewers in the first week, according to Deadline.

What is Paramount+’s Lawmen Bass Reeves Season 1 about?

Lawmen Bass Reeves focuses on the legendary lawman’s rise from a slave fighting for the South to the only black U.S. Marshall west of Mississippi. The series also takes a critical look at race relations during the period known as Reconstruction in America.

Here at FandomWire, we said Lawmen Bass Reeves is worth watching for the “Oyelowo performance, who is simply brilliant in the role here. Tender, tough, and remarkably human, Oyelowo transcends the Western trope that comes with the genre by being a fully three-dimensional character.”

What Could Paramount+’s Lawmen Bass Reeves Season 2 be about?

According to reports, Lawmen: Bass Reeves is set to be a limited anthology series. Of course, Sheridan added “Lawmen” to the title. They can create several limited series based on men from the period or even modern times. Does that mean a series on Wyatt Earp will be in our future? I put my money on Wyatt Russell being cast in the role.

Of course, plenty of stories are left to tell since Lawmen: Bass Reeves was based on two large volumes of historical non-fiction. For one, Reeves was legendary for arresting his son. Also, several storylines related to the Reeves family have gone unresolved. For one, their former “owner” was assaulted by Jennie (Banks) after suggesting they come back to work in her home.

There is also the looming threat of their daughter feuding with a white family in town that has been harassing the Reeves family. Not to mention, black men and women went missing due to the threat of law-changing ownership rules during Reconstruction. With that and Reeves’ arrest of over 3,000 outlaws in his time, there are more stories to tell.
