The upcoming Wonder Woman is still early on in development, but it appears rumors of the game being live service may have tarnished its reputation at this early stage. This has prompted Warner Bros to confirm that there will be no live service element to the game, which may be a relief to those fans who believe that the game will benefit from not having this.

Despite being heavily focused on live service games, it appears that there has been a change in direction for the latest DC game featuring the Amazonian Princess. Another DC title scheduled for release in February next year, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is confirmed to still have live service as part of its gameplay which hasn’t gone well with some fans.

What Do We Know About the Upcoming Wonder Woman game?

Wonder Woman
After great success with The Lord of the Rings titles, Monolith has turned their attention to the legendary Justice League character.

First announced at the Game Awards in December 2021, the upcoming Wonder Woman is confirmed to be a single-player open-world experience taken from a third-person perspective. In addition to confirmation that the game will not feature live service, it has also been confirmed that the game will feature an original DC storyline which thankfully means no adaptations of the Wonder Woman movies.

Speaking to IGN, a Warner Bros. spokesperson said,

Wonder Woman is a single-player action-adventure game set in a dynamic open-world. This third person experience will allow players to become Diana of Themyscira and introduce an original story set in the DC Universe, while also featuring the Nemesis System. Wonder Woman is not being designed as a live service

Monolith who developed arguably two of the best Lord of the Rings games, Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor and Middle-Earth: Shadow of War, have been tasked with bringing the same level of success to the Amazonian warrior princess, Diana of Themyscira, and fans are certainly excited by the developers taking on this challenge.

Whilst some DC fans may be disappointed to hear that Gal Gadot will not feature in the game, it does mean that there is a lot more artistic freedom in terms of the storyline and gameplay which can only be a good thing. The upcoming game will feature Monolith’s Nemesis systems which was a great success in the Middle-Earth games.

The Narrative Director for the Wonder Woman game had previously hinted at this system being implemented and how it would shape a player’s gameplay experience, this has since been confirmed by WB. It will be interesting to see how the vengeance and retribution system will affect the various NPCs that Wonder Woman interacts with throughout the game.

At the time of writing there is still very little known about the upcoming Wonder Woman game and details are being kept well under wraps. As with any upcoming titles, countless rumors are circulating, and fans will have to take each of them with a pinch of salt until there are official announcements from publishers WB.

Wonder Woman/Suicide Squad
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is one upcoming WB game that has live service.

That being said, we can safely assume that the game itself will begin on the mystic island of the Amazons, Themyscira, and from there the Amazonian Princess will move into the world of the mortals. Having a long list of known enemies throughout the years in DC Comics, it remains to be seen as to who may feature as a prospective villain in the game.

Following the confirmation from WB that the upcoming Wonder Woman game is not being designed as a live service there was a mixed reaction from fans on social media;

“Gameplay > words. Make me believe what you say.” –@MaximusPolyglot

“WB probably WANTED it to be a live service game, but after the disastrous launch of Shadow of War, Monolith likely refused to do that again.” – @WebbySpidy

“I never doubted Monolith” – @BatFamNerd

Whilst Warner Brothers have confirmed that the upcoming Wonder Woman game will not be live service, some fans remain unconvinced by this and think that talk is cheap. It remains to be seen if the Monolith-developed game will win over some of the doubters and whether it will be able to compete with some of the superhero titles currently available.
