The worst characters in gaming are typically the ones these protagonists are up against. However, amid the shortage of single-player campaigns, thanks to the live service epidemic, protagonists are becoming rare in video games.
But that’s not always the case. Sometimes, protagonists can be just as annoying. The sad part is players cannot get rid of them if they like the video game they are playing. Such a dilemma.

5. Abby Anderson from The Last of Us Part II
Readers might already be expecting this name on the list, so we put it there to satiate their speculation hunger. She might be hated more due to the fact that she eliminated an opportunity for players to play as Joel in the sequel to the popular action-adventure game than to the fact that she killed him.
What’s hard is that players have to control her character in the game instead. However, that’s the initial encounter between her and the gamers. As soon as they progress with her journey, they realize what went behind her story, and it is understandable that she came out to be that way. Although not one of the worst characters in gaming, she has certainly left her mark on the gaming sphere.
4. Baby Mario from Yoshi’s Island
While Mario is certainly gained significant love over the years from gamers, he too was an annoying human once. But that’s understandable, as he was just a child riding on the back of his dinosaur friend Yoshi, trying to reunite him with his brother Luigi. Yoshi and Mario’s bond was so strong that whenever he got off the dinosaur’s back, he began shedding tears.
This may sound cute, but it becomes annoying at one point. Until he’s back with Yoshi again, he won’t stop crying. The concept was introduced by the developers, so the players do whatever it takes to reunite the duo before Mario is reunited with his brother.
3. Ashley Graham from Resident Evil 4
Let’s admit it, if it weren’t for gamers’ crush on the president’s daughter, Ashley Graham would’ve been the most annoying protagonist today. Every time she is in trouble, she just starts screaming her lungs out. Leon deserves all the respect after coping with that in there. Thankfully, the game’s remake emphasized this and made her at least tolerable.
Just like Victor Reznov is haunted by his father’s music in Black Ops, the phrase “Leon! Help!” lives rent-free in gamers’ heads even today. But that was the thrill of keeping the players on edge. Without her, Resident Evil 4 might be just a shoot-and-get-over-with game that players might not have enjoyed to its fullest. When it comes to the worst characters in gaming, she definitely fits the bill.
2. Mr. Satan From Dragon Ball Z
Gohan’s father-in-law was literally a painful sight for the eyes. The fact that he took all the credit for the Z fighters’ efforts against Cell can make anyone hate the man. Although he is not a very bad guy, he isn’t very heroic. However, his bond with Majin Buu does help the Z fighters as they struggle to hold the diabolical entity.
Even in video games like Budokai Tenkaichi 3, players refrain from choosing him unless they are following the original Dragon Ball arcs. Mr. Satan is most definitely one of the worst characters in gaming.
1. The Dog from Duck Hunt
That dog was everything but grateful. Duck Hunt is among the most beautiful memories of almost every person who owned a Nintendo Entertainment System back in the day. Believe it or not, the Dog from the game has harassed more gamers than anything they’ve come across in video games.
While players tried hard to get him as many ducks as possible to satiate his hunger, he laughed when they missed even one.
Anyone can hardly forget those moments when he came out of the bushes laughing. He is a bully, now long lost in video game history but alive in some of the bad memories of gamers.
