SUMMARY

  • Indiana Jones is an icon and is a character that is known in the mainstream media thanks to his magnetic screen presence, charisma and charm.
  • Now, the upcoming game was revealed at the Xbox Developer Direct and it is most certainly a relief that it doesn't take place after the events of the last or the second last movie.
  • That is because these were not at all appreciated by the majority of the fanbase and if the game followed the same path, it would have received a lot of raised eyebrows.

Xbox Developer Direct revealed many upcoming games from first-party Xbox Game Studios. Among the titles, one stood out because of its quality and the fact that the protagonist is known and loved by people who appreciate excellent and adventurous stories. This was the upcoming Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.

The title was announced and confirmed to be in development in 2021, and since then, there has been a lot of speculation and discussion about what it would offer in terms of gameplay and narrative. The Developer Direct confirmed that the title won’t be set in modern times and will be set in between the events of Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade. It is an absolute delight to see Indy back in action and for the game not to be set in modern times, as doing that would take away the franchise’s essence.

Fans rejoice as Indiana Jones and the Great Circle’s setting is a familiar one

As mentioned earlier, the title coming in 2024 will be set between the first and the third movies that were released based on the titular character’s adventures. When the title was announced initially, and fans got a glance at the announcement trailer, there wasn’t anything that was confirmed about the title.

The title’s announcement trailer was incredibly vague. While it displayed some familiar artifacts and items inseparable from Indy’s great adventures, it wasn’t known where the title would take the charismatic archaeologist.

Fans were worried it would be placed in a timeline close to the one where modern Indy movies are set. It is worth noting that modern movies focusing on the character were bereft of the charm and flavor that makes the first three or four movies so good if one liked Crystal Skull. Fans of the character and the original movies didn’t seem to like that the last one was wildly uneven in its offering.

The action sequences in The Dial of Destiny felt dry and uninteresting and most certainly missed Steven Spielberg’s pizzazz. Also, the story was a little bit all over the place thanks to lousy writing as per fans, and didn’t justify the 300 million budget of the film.

The makers of the upcoming title were probably aware of the flack received by the last two movies, and that is why the game’s place in the overall timeline of the four movies was specified beforehand. Not to mention, any more elements kept under the dark wouldn’t have made a magnificent reveal for a title without any announcement apart from the brief trailer in the last three years.

Indiana Jones will be seen venturing to far-off lands just like he did in the movies, with the game taking the player to places like the Vatican, Egypt, Sukhothai, and the snow-capped mountains of the Himalayas.

Also, the upcoming game has a lot of parallels from the movies that make for a fantastic sight, as pointed out by GameSpot on Twitter:

It could be that the stale state of the IP was meant to be fixed by including so many moments from the movies. The game will appeal to fans of the classic movies and use that as a selling point apart from the fact that Indy is still popular and regarded as an icon in media.

The game also looks excellent cinematically when looking at the cutscenes and the overall portrayal of the game’s world. The only thing known about the game’s plot point comes from one of Indiana Jones’ dialogue from the game’s reveal trailer. This is most likely what will form the significant fluff of the game’s story:

Throughout history, mankind has built sites of great spiritual significance. If you were to draw a line through all these ancient sites around the world, you get a perfectlly aligned circle.
