Marvel movies are known for captivating audiences with their expansive array of movies and shows. However, sometimes, the deleted scenes hold the key to uncharted narrative stories. Yondu, played by Michael Rooker in the MCU, has been the subject of a deleted scene, as he takes center stage in Chris Hemsworth’s Thor: Ragnarok to break the fourth wall long before Tatiana Maslany’s She-Hulk engaged in similar antics on her Disney+ show.
Yondu Breaks the Fourth Wall in a Deleted Scene
In a surprising twist, a deleted scene from Taika Waititi’s 2017 MCU film Thor: Ragnarok is shedding light on a pivotal moment that could have changed the course of the MCU. The unreleased scene, exclusively available in bonus featurettes on Vudu, brings back Michael Rooker’s Yondu from the dead.
It features Hela asking Skurge to execute a nameless god before Yondu interrupts the execution as he emerges among a crowd of Asgardians and asks for the direction of “Kevin and Lou’s offices.” He moves out of the frame once told the same, telling Skurge to “Go ahead, proceed.”
The character seems to be referring to Marvel head Kevin Feige and producer Louis D’Esposito in the scene. This would have marked the first instance for an MCU character to break the fourth wall in a manner unseen before in the MCU, even predating Tatiana Maslany’s Disney+ show She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.
While fans have been wondering why the studio would bring back a dead character just to break the fourth wall, the Guardians of the Galaxy director has explained what went on behind the now-deleted scene in Thor: Ragnarok.

James Gunn Explained How Yondu Ended up in Thor: Ragnarok
Introduced in James Gunn’s 2014 film, Michael Rooker’s Yondu died in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Once fans noticed his bride cameo in Thor: Ragnarok’s HD digital release, they started wondering what really went on behind the scenes.
The director of Guardians of the Galaxy later took to Twitter to reveal that the scene was never meant to be in the final cut. As per Comicbook, he explained on X (Twitter) that “Rooker was at the lot shooting his bit for the Guardians Mission Breakout ride/Halloween version” when he stepped on the set of Thor to “goof around.”
The White Elephant actor later confirmed the same as he replied to Gunn, saying, “This is correct.” Gunn has been very firm on his decision to keep Yondu dead, as he once said as long as he is around, Yondu would never come back to life, as his “passing needs to mean something.”
Guardians of the Galaxy film series and Thor: Ragnarok are available to stream on Disney+.
