After Yu Yu Hakusho concluded, Yoshihiro Togashi had two options. He could have either opted for a battle manga or explored the sports genre. He came to these two genres after analyzing the reader polls. Initially, he did not pay any attention to the reader polls and was only concerned about his own ranking. But in the latter half of Yu Yu Hakusho, he explored the reader polls and discovered the two popular ongoing genres were sports manga and battle manga.

Togashi sensei chose to go with the second since the sports manga would be too much of a hassle. He said to Shonen Jump,

“For a sports manga, the setting has to be modern. That can be a real hassle (laughs). You have to be careful not to make the characters wear outdated clothes, and other things like that start to add up. But for a battle manga that doesn’t take place in modern times, you can just say, “Hey, these clothes are fashionable in this world!’ (laughs)”

Yoshihiro Togashi was right to choose a battle manga. Hunter x Hunter started as a simple adventurous anime, but as the story progressed, it went deeper and darker. The Chimera Ant arc was a masterpiece. Fans cannot even imagine what would they do if Hunter x Hunter never existed. Even though it was Togashi sensei’s laziness, it turned out to be the best decision.

Hunter x Hunter Might Have Become A Hassle For Yoshihiro Togashi

Hunter x Hunter was pretty popular when it got animated. But it could not continue for long since the manga had to go on multiple long hiatuss’ due to the mangaka’s severe back pain. In a way, he tried to avoid the hassle, but it came back to him. Some might even think that choosing a sports manga might seem to be a hassle at first, but it would have finished faster and left the fans with a belly full of satisfaction. Yoshihiro Togashi has inspired several mangaka, including Tite Kubo and Gege Akutami.

Togashi sensei has been going on and off with writing his magnum opus. Whenever he is declared fit by the physician, he enters his studio to continue from where he left. After the pain recurs, he leaves the manga. It is a hassle not only for the mangaka but also for the fans. They are always in the hope that Yoshihiro Togashi might one day complete his magnum opus. They are always praying for his speedy recovery.
