“Justice League Unlimited” was the epic team-up of Earth’s greatest heroes. Unlike its predecessor’s episodic format, JLU offered a vast array of standalone adventures featuring the iconic DC heroes we all know and love – from Superman and Batman to lesser-known gems like Fire and Ice.
Fast forward to today, with James Gunn taking the reins of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran. Fans are abuzz with anticipation for the future of the DC cinematic universe. Among the possible future projects of the new DC is a revived JLU, but there’s one huge roadblock to this.
Fans Do Not Want Justice League Unlimited Without Kevin Conroy as Batman
Kevin Conroy’s gruff yet nuanced portrayal of Batman became synonymous with the character for a generation of fans. His voice perfectly embodied the duality of Bruce Wayne – the billionaire playboy by day and the brooding vigilante by night. For many, Conroy’s Batman was the definitive animated version, breathing life into the character across countless DCAU projects, including Justice League and Justice League Unlimited.
The tragic passing of Kevin Conroy in November 2022 left a void in the hearts of fans. While fans talk of a potential JLU revival, a significant portion of the fanbase is adamant that it wouldn’t be complete without Conroy as the voice of Batman. Many feel his absence would be a major disservice to the legacy of the DCAU and a betrayal of the fans’ emotional connection to the series.
You can’t do this without Kevin Conroy plus this show had like…an actual definitive satisfying conclusion that felt natural and earned https://t.co/zyuyh9R89j

It won’t be the same without Kevin Conroy (R.I.P.) as Batman. 😢💯

It won’t work without Kevin as Batman/Bruce. However I offer an alternative to this, what about a Justice League Beyond series taking place sometime after JLU’s Epilogue and set it just after Bruce had passed away. pic.twitter.com/zz7WSOW5V4

Can DC Studios find a way to honor Conroy’s legacy while potentially reviving Justice League Unlimited for a new generation?
What James Gunn Thinks Of a Potential Justice League Unlimited Revival?
James Gunn, the co-CEO of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, has become a central figure in shaping the future of DC’s live-action and animated projects. One fan took to Threads to ask Gunn what he thinks about reviving Justice League Unlimited after the success of X-Men’97l and the director had a really great reply to the request.
“X-Men ‘97 is fun because it’s unique and not desperately trying to follow the trends of everything around it. So I’d rather just keep doing that.” – James Gunn on Threads
James Gunn’s recent comments hint that while he appreciates the success of X-Men ’97, a straight-up revival of Justice League Unlimited might not be his approach. This doesn’t necessarily mean a JLU revival is off the table entirely.
