“The South African crew had been filming what is known as a sac spider, crawling up and down out of this tree… no one told me, I’ve run out of the building, into the wilderness as this sac spider just crawled down on me.”

The sensation of the spider’s delicate yet menacing movements against her skin left her paralyzed with fear. Despite the terrifying nature of the incident, she was ultimately saved from the spider’s venomous grasp. Whittaker recalled,

“Our first assistant director was pretty casual, they just picked it up and chucked it… And then we found out I could have died, it was horrific.”

It was a yellow sac spider, common to the region. It typically doesn’t pose a fatal threat to humans, its venom can induce excruciating pain and cause significant tissue damage.
