Alaqua Cox, who assumed the role of Maya Lopez, made her first appearance in the MCU as a primary villain in Hawkeye. Her character wanted to avenge the death of her father’s alleged murder by Ronin, Hawkeye’s alter ego, portrayed by Jeremy Renner.
In the final episode of the season, Maya finds out that her uncle, Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, planned her father’s death by prompting her to shoot him. Now, in the latest trailer of the Echo spinoff, the backstory of Echo and Kingpin’s connection has been hinted at.
Echo Director Gives Out Interesting Details About The Show
In the comic books, Echo has been shown as a negative character who possesses the ability to imitate anyone’s combat technique. As per ComicBook.com, the director and executive producer Sydney Freeland confirmed that although Echo (Alaqua Cox) has been portrayed as a villain, she won’t have the same abilities as shown in the comic books.
Freeland suggested that the team behind the show wanted to keep a tone that focused on Echo’s role as a villain, taking it forward from Hawkeye. The team wanted this to resonate in discussions with the executives as well as the visual style they created.
Freeland said (via ComicBook):
“We wanted something that, again, if you’re coming off of Hawkeye, and you have to keep in mind she’s a villain. She’s a villain. And so tonally, we wanted to lean into that. I think in talking with the executives and our approach, and when building visual style, it was sort of like, ‘Oh yeah, lean into that, lean into that.’ Yeah, so her power in the comic books is that she can copy anything, any movement, any whatever. It’s kind of lame, I will say that is not her power [in the show] and I’ll just kind of leave it at that.”
It looks like Echo will have some resemblance to the Defenderverse rather than Marvel’s Disney+ shows. Not only will the show be available for binge-watching, but it will also be the maiden Disney+ series by Marvel to be released on Hulu simultaneously. Moreover, Echo will also be Marvel’s first Disney+ series to release with a TV-MA rating.

Vincent D’Onofrio on his MCU Return With Echo
Vincent D’Onofrio assumed the role of Fisk in Hawkeye, setting the stage for him to return to the MCU. Previously, while speaking to EW, the actor discussed his experiences while playing the character.
He told EW:
“Once I reconnected to the way I played him [on Daredevil], what the events in his life were, and attached myself to the emotional aspects of the character, then it was fine, I was good to go. I know that we were picking up with the same guy.”
The new Echo trailer suggests that Kingpin and Maya’s relationship will take a dark turn, as it shows him at gunpoint, hinting at her conflict with her dead father.
