Brad Pitt Names Johnny Depp’s Co-star as His Favorite Actor of All Time

Edward Scissorhands proved to be a huge breakthrough moment in the careers of Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder, with both earning plenty of plaudits for their performances as Edward Scissorhands and Kim respectively in the fantasy gothic romance revolving around the titular character, who is a synthetic man with scissor hands.

However, this movie also emerged as one of the most prominent movies of Dianne Wiest, who played Peg, a kindly Avon lady in the movie. Throughout her career, Wiest’s most successful roles came as a supporting member of the cast. She won two Academy Awards for her supporting roles in Hannah and Her Sisters and Bullets Over Broadway. However, in the New York theater scene in the 70s, she was an absolute star.

Accordingly, her acting prowess and screen presence impressed Brad Pitt, who explained in length why he considered Wiest his favorite actor. He also talked about why despite Wiest not being a s-x symbol he found her the most beautiful woman on the screen. Speaking to Tiger Beat magazine in 1996 (via UNILAD), the Troy sensation said:

“When you see a person, do you just concentrate on their looks? It’s just a first impression. Then there’s someone who doesn’t catch your eye immediately, but you talk to them, and they become the most beautiful thing in the world. The greatest actors aren’t what you would call beautiful s-x symbols. I’ll tell you who my favourite actress is: Dianne Wiest. And you wouldn’t call her a s-x symbol. Dianne Wiest is, to me, the most beautiful woman on the screen.”

Pitt’s choice of his favorite leading man was also very interesting considering the era in which he worked. He liked Robert Redford in older films, as those movies allowed their main characters to stand up for their principles.

Brad Pitt’s Favorite Actor Was the First Name on the Cast List of Johnny Depp’s Iconic Movie

Before Depp got the part of Edward, many already-established actors like Tom Cruise, Jim Carrey, and Gary Oldman were considered to bring the solitary life of an artificial man on the big screen. However, it seems there was little doubt about who’d play Peg, the lady who takes in Edward after the passing of his inventor.

Director Tim Burton revealed that Wiest was the first to sign on and it was her stamp of approval that started the domino effect for other casting decisions.

“Dianne, in particular, was wonderful. She was the first actress to read the script, supported it completely and, because she is so respected, once she had given it her stamp of approval, others soon got interested,” Burton said (via IMDb).

Another thing that made Wiest’s stint so special was the fact that most of the characters in the film were representative of real people the filmmaker knew while growing up. However, he revealed that Peg was an amalgamation of someone he wanted in that story, as a guardian angel fantasy.
