One of the highlights of Adam Sandler’s Happy Gilmore is the antagonist Shooter McGavin. An arrogant pro golfer who hates Gilmore’s lack of etiquette, the character reportedly became a huge hit among the golfing circles. McGavin was also reportedly voted to be the Best Villain by Golfer’s Digest, beating out prominent baddies such as Ivan Drogo from Rocky IV.

Christopher McDonald played the role of Shooter McGavin in the film. Though he has been synonymous with the character and has made his mark in pop culture, McDonald was reportedly not interested in playing the villain when the part was offered to him initially. Talking to And So It Begins, he said,

“I was tired, I wanted to see more of my family. But then I played a round of golf in Seattle, and we won. And that high was something else. So, with my golf shoes still on, I went in the locker room, called my agent, and said, ‘Is that golf movie still available, because I just won this tournament and I’m feeling a little bit, well, Shooterish?’”

The actor mentioned that he did his best to not make the character a caricature of a villain and to give more depth to him. He also credited director Dennis Dugan for allowing him to improvise on set and make Shooter McGavin more human.
