Hollywood feuds are inevitable. Over the years, the film industry has witnessed the greatest feuds between iconic personalities, from Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone’s competitive spat to George Clooney’s fallout with Russell Crowe. Similarly, Oscar winner Denzel Washington was involved in a long feud with prominent filmmaker Quentin Tarantino.
Although Tarantino wasn’t as established at that time, he had worked on a script for Denzel Washington in 1995. Due to a creative disagreement, Washington publicly called out the Pulp Fiction director for an alleged racist dialogue. However, the two-time Academy Award winner made it up to him years later as life came full circle.
Denzel Washington pleaded sorry to Quentin Tarantino
Before making it big in Hollywood, the 60-year-old director used his ingenuity to write scripts for movies of other directors. In addition to other notable films, Tarantino assisted the scripting of 1995’s Crimson Tide helmed by Tony Scott. The movie starred Denzel Washington as Lt. Commander Ron Hunter alongside Gene Huckman, James Gandolfini, and Matt Craven.
Reportedly, a particular dialogue in the script irked Washington and he blamed Quentin Tarantino for being racist, on the film’s set. Sparking a feud that would go on for another 7 years. During a 2012 interview with GQ, The Equalizer star let slip his daughter, Katia’s professional association with Tarantino. He said,
“My oldest daughter—I see her digging her independence. She doesn’t like me talking about it, but she’s working with Tarantino.”
Consequently, the interviewer couldn’t help but recall Washington’s long feud with the Kill Bill director. Washington didn’t hesitate to reveal that he had apologized for the allegations long back, in 2002, precisely. The 69-year-old actor disclosed,
“Isn’t that interesting how life goes? But I buried that hatchet. I sought him out ten years ago. I told him, “Look, I apologise.” You’ve just gotta let that go. You gonna walk around with that the rest of your life? He seemed relieved. And then here we are ten years later, and my daughter’s working with him. Life is something.”
Washington’s daughter was working as an editorial production assistant in Tarantino’s Django: Unchained and the actor seemed content with how things had evened out between the esteemed personalities.
Quentin Tarantino: From rags to riches
While the director’s background doesn’t really signify “rags”, with his mother working as a nurse in Los Angeles, Tarantino had to work his way up the ladder. His distinct craft developed when he was working at a video store, owing to his passion for movies. The star director worked on notable scripts like True Romance and Natural Born Killers during his tenure at the store, per All American Speakers Bureau.
His movies were distinct for the gritty and violent elements, with Reservoir Dogs giving him the big break in the film industry.
