Zoë Saldaña’s affinity for intergalactic sci-fi adventures is well documented through her filmography. With a prominent presence in major franchises like James Cameron’s Avatar, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, and the Star Trek reboot, the accomplished actor has been an integral factor in all these films becoming huge box office successes.
With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 heralding James Gunn’s swansong for Marvel before becoming DC head, Saldaña’s association with the franchise was officially over by the actor’s own admission. The Avatar star though, believed that Marvel would be making a huge mistake if the beloved film series isn’t taken forward for future films. With a new team having been introduced at the end of the 3rd film, fans are now debating the path this narrative could take.
Why Zoë Saldaña Is Firmly Vouching For The Guardians Of The Galaxy Franchise
Zoe Saldaña’s role as Gamora in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy gave her a lot of popularity among fans all over the world. Along with her co-actors Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, and others who made up the entertaining intergalactic team, Saldaña was a pivotal factor in making the franchise a huge blockbuster.
Following the 3rd film directed by James Gunn, the Star Trek actor confirmed that she was officially done with the character while the film was also being viewed as a conclusion to the series. But the celebrity believed that there was so much more than the narrative could offer, especially with the ending of the film indicating the development of a brand new team.
In an interview with The Discourse Podcast, she elaborated on why she felt it was extremely important for the franchise to continue to make more films even if it has been established that the old characters who were the face of the movies will never come back.
“I think it would be a huge loss for Marvel if they didn’t find a way to bring back the Guardians of the Galaxy. It’s just such a fan-favorite group of misfits, you know? And then at the helm, they had a voice like James Gunn’s writing—which is just so marvelous for and very specific for this genre. And it’s so great for this genre as well.
While the actor clearly stated that she would not be returning as Gamora, she added a little bit of intrigue when she hinted that the character may still have scope to reappear if a future film happens.
Netizens Are Divided Over The Future Of Guardians Of The Galaxy
While Zoë Saldaña confirmed that she would not be returning as Gamora anymore, the actor was vociferous in her support of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. She believed that there were many exciting possibilities to explore in future films with a new set of team members who were introduced at the end of the 3rd film.
Marvel fans though, are divided about Saldaña’s opinions on the future of the franchise. While some netizens felt that a film featuring a new intergalactic team would be just what the doctor ordered for Marvel and the MCU, others were not so convinced about this. A few discerning fans felt that this narrative would lend itself well to a series while others believed that these films would not make sense without the original cast.
I do agree with this, but in a series format now. It feels like their theatrical run is over, but I think they still have plenty of stories they could focus on in a series.
This would also help with introducing and getting to know the new guardians better. pic.twitter.com/aasWq1W48y

GoTG 3 was enough. It's gotten played out.
Let's invest effort on the next GoTG – something people had never heard of until it was done really well.

Drax should get a solo series, cuz he has some untapped potential
Gamora I could see returning in a Eternals tv show or smth
Groot/Rocket should appear in a Nova Project
I expect the rest to appear in Avengers 5 & 6
but they pretty much finished their storylines
