Director Zack Snyder is busy promoting the second installment in his ambitious Rebel Moon universe, which is set to hit Netflix this week. However, while promoting the film, Snyder opened up about the future of the ever-evolving franchise. The director revealed that he had several more installments in mind and planned for at least six more films.
While Snyder seems optimistic about the future of the Rebel Moon universe, there is a disturbing trend about Netflix’s original slate that might worry some fans. Given Netflix’s past history and treatment of some popular franchises, it is likely that Rebel Moon might meet an untimely end. Here is what Snyder said about his future plans for Rebel Moon and why they might never happen.
Zack Snyder Reveals Plans to Expand Rebel Moon Universe With At Least 6 More Movies
Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver is set to continue the story from the previous installment in Zack Snyder’s space-opera franchise. Recently, Snyder was promoting the second installment and sat down for a conversation with Radio Times. During the interview, Snyder revealed he had long-term plans for the franchise.
“I guess four makes sense. Four or six movies, depending… I guess it’s whether or not every time we make one of these movies we make two, that’s the question.”
Snyder made the above statement explaining how he plans to take the Star Wars-inspired franchise forward. The Man of Steel director added that he had completed a story treatment for a potential third installment. However, a threequel hasn’t been greenlit by Netflix just yet.
Snyder’s plans for the Rebel Moon universe seem extremely ambitious given the lackluster reception of the first installment. As a result, Snyder’s comments hinted that the future of the franchise will most likely depend upon the success or failure of the second installment.
Netflix’s History of Pre-mature Cancellations Threatens Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon Plans
Despite Zack Snyder‘s ambitious plans, the future of the Rebel Moon universe might be in trouble. Firstly, Netflix is notorious for premature cancellations of some of its biggest properties. The streaming giant has previously canceled shows such as Shadow and Bone and Santa Clarita Diet. Even positively received shows like Lockwood & Co. were axed after just one season.
Meanwhile, established IPs like Resident Evil and shows like 1899 and Mindhunter with arguably some of the best creative teams were also prematurely ended. Some of these properties made a rocky start but were canceled by Netflix just when fans had started enjoying them, raising questions about the future of Snyder’s ambitious plans for Rebel Moon.
Irrespective of the second installment’s performance, the franchise might meet an untimely end because of Netflix’s history. At the same time, the streaming giant was recently reported to be shifting its approach to big-budget films and focusing on improving the quality of its content library. Snyder’s films are generally met with polarizing reviews from critics, which further adds to the uncertainty of his nascent franchise’s future.
Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver is slated to hit Netflix on April 19, 2024.
