Capcom is pretty good at making open-world games, or one can say they have become pretty excellent at designing massive open worlds that are fun to explore. Monster Hunter Rise is one example, and the most recent one is Dragon’s Dogma 2. This is the latest game from the Japanese developer and publisher that is making all kinds of headlines.

Fans of the first game know how difficult these games can end up. From giving players difficult mini-bosses to deal with to putting them in hairy situations, this game never makes things easy for gamers. The same is the case with Dragon’s Dogma 2. It is as hard as open-world games come, and now fans have discovered something that makes this game as unpredictable as it is.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 players beware of this unexpected enemy that can spell the end of your game

In Dragon’s Dogma 2, players are tasked with taking down a bunch of enemies. Those enemies also include some massive, inhumane beasts. When not fighting those enemies, players can explore the open world and complete tasks given to them by a bunch of NPCs that are essential for completing the story.

Sometimes things can get out of hand too; players can meet too many enemies at once, and they can even come across an enemy that’s way too hard for them to fight. To counter this, gamers get the option to create pawns. These are sort of NPC companions that would follow the player and fight anyone the player fights.

But these pawns can be a big problem for the player too. Eventually, players would have a whole bunch of pawns following their orders; it’s a fun mechanic. But it can become a problem in minutes if players choose to ignore some telltale signs.

Some players have discovered that sometimes pawns stop listening to their orders. When this happens, this pawn would also be seen blabbering around some weird stuff, and when looked closely, players would see red, glowing eyes. This is a problem!

This is a sickness called the Dragonsplague. This happens all of a sudden, and there’s no clear warning that it is happening to your pawn. You have to find it yourself, or worse can happen. Eventually, that pawn would transform into a dragon and destroy the entire city. This would kill all those crucial NPCs mentioned above. This sickness spreads too, which makes finding a cure for it very important. Or this would spell the end of those 110+ hours you have spent completing this massive game.

There’s a straightforward cure to it; all players have to do is dismiss that infected pawn, drown it in a river or anywhere they feel like, and then revive it. This would make it normal. Also, this transformation happens when players are resting at an inn, so it can also be avoided by simply not resting at an inn.

There’s even a way to revive those dead NPCs using something called the wake stone, but players know how rare those are. Hence, prevention is always better than the cure.

This mechanic sounds similar to something players have already seen

A still from Sekiro

This mechanic seems like an evolution of the infection minigame in Metal Gear Solid V. In that game, soldiers in Snake’s army start getting infected one by one until Snake finds a pattern and locks in the reason and root of that infection.

Another game that had a similar mechanic was Sekiro. In that game, a disease called Dragonrot spreads amongst NPCs if the player dies too much. Yet, it’s an incredible mechanic that Dragon’s Dogma 2 has introduced to keep players on their toes.
