Video games have carried the legacy of Iron Man since Robert Downey Jr. stepped down as the billionaire superhero in the movies. However, the attempt hasn’t been very fruitful as the character’s presence in Marvel’s Avengers didn’t exactly become the apple of the fans’ eyes. Still, efforts haven’t been stopped yet and the fan-favorite superhero is reportedly getting a standalone open-world game.
Open-world games are fun but the superhero genre is more inclined towards a linear narrative. Still, games like Marvel’s Spider-Man and its associates have become standard for open-world in this bracket. Now Electronic Arts’ Motive Studio is developing an Iron Man game which may raise questions if it’ll enlarge this bracket or fall out of it to become another strange kid on the block.
EA May Do Better With An Open World Setting in an Iron Man Game
In the latest job listing at EA, the team has a place for one Senior Technical Artist who can “help oversee the rendering related aspects of an open world action-adventure AAA title.” It also mentions that the opportunity is strictly for Montreal, QC, Canada. Details regarding the game have remained sparse since its announcement in 2022 and concerns regarding its status began emerging after the company announced mass layoffs.
Nonetheless, the job post should deliver some reassurance to the fans as the game is without a shadow of a doubt in development. EA’s Montreal-based Motive Studio is overseeing the development and fans can expect a fine product as the developer has worked on remakes of games like Mass Effect 2 and Dead Space.
But that doesn’t go without saying that EA has not been in a very good place with the open-world setting lately. Take Battlefield 2042 for instance. Just like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 stained the franchise, Battlefield 2042 too was a killer (literally). Both the military shooters are also an example of the fact that none of the video game franchises is untouchable.
Electronic Arts Must Have a Lot of Marvel On Its Plate
Iron Man may be the new crown bearer among the Marvel video games if it won’t be affected by the quantity contagion. Besides a few names, the recent Marvel movies and TV shows have been a great disaster, all thanks to the bulk content, poor VFX, and incorporation of AI in them. Akin to the situation, a lot of video games associated with the franchise are in development.
Among is one standalone Black Panther game which another EA studio dubbed Cliffhanger Games is developing. Other Marvel games that players may look forward to include 1943: Rise of Hydra, Blade, Wolverine, and more.
Both, Iron Man and Black Panther won’t just be competing against the superhero genre, but open-world settings too, which Marvel’s Spider-Man games have mastered already. EA has got to figure out attentively how it is going to overshadow them.
