Ryan Reynolds has given his fans just what they seek from him through every single one of his performances. This especially includes his anti-hero Deadpool, which has even given fans the delight of seeing their favorite actor immaculately fight the most brutal and scariest villains from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, always standing his ground no matter how barbarous they were.
But while those menacing villains don’t seem to be able to terrify him, there’s something else that managed to do that part. And, surprisingly enough, this something else actually included Reynolds performing in front of his Korean fans while promoting the sequel to his 2016 masterpiece film of the beloved anti-hero six years ago, even though he was beyond “scared” to do it!
Ryan Reynolds was “So Scared” of Performing in Front of His Korean Fans!
Every Ryan Reynolds fan knows that the actor has fearlessly fought some of the deadliest villains onscreen, especially those from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), whom he epically put an end to through his iconic character of Deadpool. And yet, one sea of audience managed to instill all of that fear inside of him.
This audience was none other than his Korean fans (who absolutely adore him), and the time they instilled these very feelings inside of him was when he performed a grand opening for the South Korean singing competition program King of Mask Singer in 2018 while promoting his masterpiece of the year, Deadpool 2.
According to what Reynolds took to his Instagram stories to share (via @vancityreynolds on IG), today officially marks the sixth anniversary of his appearance on the show. And this anniversary didn’t come without a series of feelings returning, as Reynolds wrote:
“It’s the sixth anniversary of my Korean Masked Singer debut. I was so innocent. So scared.”
That being said, on the show itself, the Free Guy actor had admitted just how scared he was while performing Tomorrow from the musical Annie onstage for the show. After claiming he was “so sorry for that song,” a very flabbergasted Reynolds also shared how nervous he was while singing, even saying (via MBCentertainment on YouTube):
“I’m wearing an adult diaper.”
While that’s hilarious enough, what’s ironic is the fact that the Deadpool & Wolverine actor himself had planned to do this very show to promote his movie!
Singing in Front of His Korean Fans was His Own Idea in the First Place
Almost two years ago, during an interview with TODAY, Reynolds had also admitted how it was his own idea in the first place to perform on that reality TV show. Sharing how he wanted to do “the weirdest show we can go on,” he said:
“This was before The Masked Singer was in the U.S. So they said, ‘They have this show called [King of] Mask Singer, which is huge in South Korea.’ I said, ‘Lord, we’re doing this show. We have to do that show.'”
Plus, as per the fan-favorite actor, “no Westerner had been on that show before” at the time he went on it, so it actually turned out to be “a big surprise when I lost the mask.” But that isn’t all, for even then, The Proposal actor didn’t hesitate to acknowledge the fact that he instantly regretted signing up for it when he was there.
He said:
“What’s crazy is, I was in actual hell. When I was there, I was like, ‘Why did I sign up to do this? This is horrible! This is truly horrible!'” Reynolds recalled. “I don’t even know this song, I don’t know how to do this. It was traumatic.”
Nonetheless, even though he may have found it absolutely overwhelming and traumatizing, Ryan Reynolds’ Korean fans seemed to be truly in love and couldn’t control their excitement when the actor took off his mask to reveal who he was, so it might as well be called a win-win situation for both, no? Ryan?
