Fans might be wondering who was the unexpected voice of Ambrosius in the fourth season of The Boys, and it’s someone everybody knows but would never expect to play the role – Tilda Swinton. Yes, the Oscar-winning actress is the voice behind The Deep’s octopus lover!
Many would be wondering why on earth would a world-class talent like Swinton take on a role as bizarre as Ambrosius, but fans should not forget that she has played a wide range of characters, from an age-old sorcerer in Doctor Strange to a small pug in Isle of Dogs.
Tilda Swinton Voiced The Octopus Ambrosius In The Boys Season 4
Showrunner Eric Kripke revealed via Business Insider that the moment they decided to make Chace Crawford’s The Deep and the octopus Ambrosius a pair of lovers, they knew that they had to give the latter a voice.
We just were like, we need the most British, Oscar-winningest, classiest actor we can possibly find for that part. There’s four of them in the world, and Tilda Swinton is one of them.
Fans have met Ambrosius before Season 4, but no one would really pay attention to a random sea creature. Apparently, The Deep has been keeping his aquatic lover hidden away in a water tank in his closet. This is the first time the character has given voice. Kripke said of Tilda Swinton:
She came into the booth for one long session, and I was there, and it was really a pinch-me moment watching this world-class, highest caliber actress say the most ridiculous s—t as Ambrosius.
The producer admitted via Entertainment Weekly that they did not personally know the actress. They were only able to communicate with her via a representative. “We just reached out to a rep and sent her the script.” The agent told them that Swinton liked the concept and she thought it was hilarious, hence she wanted to do it.
Perhaps this is, by far, the strangest role Swinton has done in her career. Despite it being a minor character, she was very generous to lend her talent to The Boys.
Chace Crawford Was Surprised With The Casting Of Tilda Swinton
Chace Crawford, who played Kevin Moskowitz or The Deep, admitted he had no idea who they were going to cast as Ambrosius. He shared in the same interview with Business Insider:
I kind of take it as I open the scripts, right? I had no idea that it was going to be Tilda Swinton.
The Deep met Ambrosius while attending Herogasm, and since he could speak to sea creatures, he was able to build a rapport with the octopus, thus ended up taking her home and continuing to have s*xual affairs with her.
Not even the core production team of The Boys expected they would have The Chronicles of Narnia star on the show until she agreed to do it. Even though it’s a small role, it instantly gained worldwide attention, and that’s all thanks to Swinton!
