Steven Spielberg is one maverick director among his contemporaries who has mastered every genre in the cinema handbook. The director has made intense thrillers, sci-fi dramas, historical/war epics, and comedies. Spielberg can do no wrong and as an ardent lover of cinema, he has no plans of slowing down.
His sci-fi flicks such as Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and A.I. Artificial Intelligence have been celebrated as some of the best entries in the genre. According to new reports, he is heading back to that genre yet again with his new film, and the recently released Dune: Part Two may have had a hand in Spielberg developing that itch.
Steven Spielberg Reportedly Returning to The Sci-Fi Genre With New UFO Film
Steven Spielberg was a game-changer back in the day with his unique sci-fi films that pushed the boundaries of what one could achieve with the inventive use of special effects. Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Jurassic Park, and War of the Worlds were sublime entries in the sci-fi genre and remain some of his most memorable works.
While it has been a while since he pursued a sci-fi project (his last was 2018’s Ready Player One), Spielberg recently expressed his love and admiration for Denis Villeneuve‘s Dune: Part Two, calling it one of the greatest sci-fi films he has ever seen. The awe-inspiring nature of that film seems to have greatly inspired Spielberg as it has been reported that he will be back to doing sci-fi yet again.
According to Variety, the acclaimed director’s next film will be a sci-fi UFO film with an original idea that he came up with. He tapped His Jurassic Park writer David Koepp to pen the screenplay of the film based on his idea. This is familiar territory for him as he has already done a UFO film back in the day with Close Encounters of the Third Kind, which he wrote and directed.
With the winning combo of Spielberg and Koepp, one can expect another groundbreaking film from the duo, after what they did with Jurassic Park. It will also be exciting to see the new approach Spielberg takes with this new UFO film.
Steven Spielberg’s Bullitt Will Be ‘Wildly Entertaining’ Says His Producing Partner
Some time ago, it was announced that Steven Spielberg was directing a reimagining of the 1968 neo-noir action film Bullitt (via Deadline). Bradley Cooper is playing Frank Bullitt, which was played by Steve McQueen in the original film. Shooting has not started for the film and it seems the recent strikes put a halt in the pre-production process.
Speaking to GamesRadar+, one of Spielberg’s producing partners Kristie Macosko Krieger revealed that Spielberg and Josh Singer are writing the script. While the team does not know whether it will be Spielberg’s immediate next film, Krieger teased that the film will be wildly entertaining like the original. She said,
“I’m producing it. Steven [Spielberg] and Josh Singer, who is writing the script, they are working on the story. I hope we have a script soon as the writers’ strike put us behind a bit. But they are working on it – I couldn’t tell you if it’s the next movie we are making as I don’t know at this point. I think that it will be a wildly entertaining film.”
Cooper recently garnered praise for his incredible work in 2023’s Maestro. Spielberg, on the other hand, is also developing a UFO film according to new reports. Both of Spielberg’s next films seem to be currently in various stages of pre-production and it remains to be seen which one starts filming first.
