Scott has particularly great taste in films, and identifying Aftersun as a film that tears you up was more than just a way to compliment Mescal. The film is a particularly sorrowful story of a father on a vacation with her daughter. The father, played by Paul Mescal, deals with depression and detachment amid mounting financial and professional pressure. He tries to keep all these troubles away from Sophie, his daughter, who is observant of the world around her, but oblivious to her father’s pain.

Critics were thoroughly impressed with the film’s depiction of mental health and applauded how the film used cinematic language. Earning multiple accolades, the film also became the direct cause of Mescal’s nomination at the Academy Awards, under the category of Best Actor. Scott referenced a point in the film, where he asked Mescal for his birthday, perhaps intending to sing ‘He’s A Jolly Good Fellow‘ as it was sung for his character in the film.

A somber ghost story at its heart, All of Us Strangers is not very far behind with the gut punch it delivers with its story. Andrew Scott plays a lonely screenwriter, who engages in a relationship with his neighbor. Without giving away what the film works with, it is a deep and intricate exploration of personal grief and trauma, using cinematic language to great effect to convey the sorrow that grows inside the protagonists.

Already a hit with critics and filmmakers, All of Us Strangers has been enjoying quite the rave reviews and has become a contender for the Academy Awards, the campaign for which has many critics and filmmakers attached to it.
