In an interview with British GQ, Scott talked about his career throughout the years. When the talk of Sherlock came, Andrew Scott revealed that he was a bit naïve on this one. The actor remarked that he had never known about Moriarty before him and so it gave him a sense of freedom to take the character in his direction!

“I was not overly familiar with Sherlock Holmes. So, I think that helped. I didn’t really think about previous incarnations. In a way, I was kind of naive about Moriarty and what’s required of somebody who might be asked to play that part. I just wanted to have fun”
