14 Potential Blockbuster Movies Coming in Summer 2023

While many movies suffered at the box office in 2022, 2023 is the year when every studio has brought their A-game. So far, only the superhero genre has delivered mediocre films, but there have been some exciting gems from other genres throughout the Spring season.

But now as we approach the season of Summer movies, there are projects that could light the box office on fire. Following is the list of all Summer movies that could save Hollywood by becoming potential blockbusters at the theaters.

All Exciting Movies Coming in Summer 2023

1. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

Summer Movies: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

The Holiday Special acted as a happy-going refresher before James Gunn takes the fans through a very emotional final volume of his Guardians franchise. While Peter Quill and Nebula still seek to reunite with Gamora, who stands with the ravagers now, this chapter will mostly be about Rocket Raccoon’s origin story.

Joined by Adam Warlock, the Guardians will take on Rocket’s creator, the High Evolutionary. The fans need to get their tissues ready because this film will be the most tear-jerking entry of the MCU. And James Gunn has already confirmed one or more deaths.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 arrives on May 5.

2. Knights of the Zodiac

With this outing from Sony, viewers would get to enter a fantasy world where the Goddess of War reincarnates in the body of a young girl. She was sent to Earth to watch over humanity. And it becomes the destiny of a street orphan named Seiya to protect her and save the world.

He becomes a “Knight of the Zodiac” by tapping into hidden powers. This action-packed CGI fest hits the theaters on May 12, and it could turn out to be the biggest surprise of the month.

3. Fast X

The 10th installment of the long-running Fast Saga has been divided into 2 parts. As always, Dom and his family will go on some more globe-trotting adventures in Fast X. The likes of Charlize Theron, Jason Statham, and John Cena are set to return. But the exciting crowd pullers here are Brie Larson and Jason Momoa, who have joined in as well.

Larson is playing the daughter of Mr. Nobody and Momoa comes in as the big bad villain. He is the son of Hernen Reyes from Fast Five, who seeks revenge from Dom and his family for what they did to his father. He could prove to be the most dangerous villain because he isn’t afraid to go after Dom’s son.

Fast X is set to release on May 19, and then the finale should follow in 2024 or 2025.

4. The Little Mermaid

Disney is returning with yet another live-action remake as they take on The Little Mermaid this time. As far as the narrative is concerned, we’d see Halle Bailey play Ariel, the youngest mermaid daughter of King Triton.

Her adventurous spirit will send her on a journey to experience life on land, where she’d fall in love with Prince Eric, played by Jonah Hauer-King plays. Along with these characters, Awkwafina will play Scuttle and Melissa McCarthy is the villainous witch, Ursula.

The Little Mermaid is set to hit theaters on May 26.

5. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

The Spider-Verse sequel is one of the most anticipated films of 2023 as the likes of Miles Morales and Spider-Gwen are going to return alongside Peter B. Parker, who has a baby now. But when Miles enters the nexus of all Spider-Men, the whole Council of Spiders led by Miguel O’Hara will go after him.

He and Jessica Drew’s Spider-Woman will battle against Miles and Gwen as according to them, Miles is a danger to the multiverse. It will be interesting to see how he convinces Miguel to team up with him against the real villain, The Spot.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse releases on June 2nd.

6. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts

After The Last Knight, this franchise needed a fresh start and Bumblebee provided us exactly that. We got our very first look at Cybertron. And now with Rise of the Beasts, we’ll dive even deeper into the mythology of these robotic alien beings.

This film takes inspiration from the Beast Wars animated series that ran from 1996 to 2001 and we’ll witness the arrival of the Maximals who will come in to warn the Autobots about Terrocons. Together, the Maximals and Autobots will save Earth from these evil offshoots of the Decepticons.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts hits theatres on June 9.

7. The Flash

Ezra Miller’s final outing as Barry Allen will feature two variants of him. One of them will be from the old DCEU’s earth while the other one will be an 18-year-old version of himself.

Along with the two Barry Allens, we’ll see 2 Batmen as Ben Affleck makes a short appearance. But the biggest takeaway of this film is Michael Keaton’s Batman. Finally, Sasha Calle’s Supergirl will also feature in this Flashpoint storyline.

8. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

With James Mangold helming the project, Harrison Ford is set to return one last time as the Famed archaeologist and explorer Indiana Jones. The Dial of Destiny will involve a time travel element as we’d see a young de-aged Indy taking on an ex-Nazi, Doctor Jürgen Voller, played by Mads Mikkelsen. Other familiar actors involved in the film are Antonio Banderas, Boyd Holbrook, and Tobey Jones.

Indiana Jones 5 hits theatres on June 30.

9. Insidious: Fear The Dark

Sony’s Insidious franchise has grossed over $542 million across 4 films. So despite the fact that Insidious 3 and 4 really dropped the ball in terms of quality, a fifth movie was green-lit. Now, 5 years after Insidious: The Last Key, Sony will release Insidious: Fear the Dark on July 7.

It brings back Patrick Wilson’s Josh Lambert alongside Rose Byrne’s Renai Lambert from Insidious Chapter 2. The story is set 10 years after Chapter 2 and it will also feature Hollywood’s current love, Jenna Ortega. But the big change is that Patrick Wilson is also directing this one.

But with his newfound relevance in pop culture, everyone is excited to see his high-stakes stunts and fight sequences in the two-part finale of the Mission Impossible franchise.

Along with the regular cast members, Dead Reckoning Part 1 has added two new MCU ladies, Hayley Atwell, and Pom Klementieff into the mix. The villain this time is going to be former Deathstroke actor, Esai Morales. And Dead Reckoning Part 1 will arrive on July 14.

11. Barbie

Margot Robbie stars as Barbie from Barbie Land, who will set off for the human world to find true happiness. Joining her on her journey would be one of the Kens, played by Ryan Gosling. The film also stars Simu Liu as another Ken variant, while many other familiar names play other variants of Barbie.

It’ll be interesting to see if Barbie would be able to make it in the real world, which is not as “perfect” as her Barbie Land. Barbie hits theaters on July 21.

12. Oppenheimer

Taking on WB’s Barbie would be Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which also arrives on July 21. This film tells the true story of Physicist J Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy), who works with a team of scientists during the Manhattan Project. And their work leads to the development of the atomic bomb.

Along with Murphy, the all-star cast of Oppenheimer involves Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Rami Malek, and Jack Quaid.

13. Meg 2: The Trench

Jason Statham gave us an impressive Giant Shark movie back in 2018, which surprisingly made 530 million dollars at the box office. So now, Statham is coming back to tackle the Megalodons once again and Li Bingbing will be back to support him as well. Not much is known about this much-anticipated sequel yet. But we know that it will arrive on August 4.

14. Blue Beetle

Those who love Miguel on Cobra Kai will be excited for Blue Beetle because Xolo Maridueña is also playing Jaime Reyes, aka Blue Beetle. The first trailer excited many fans as it is yet another family outing that is jam-packed with action, heart, and humor.

The basic premise is that Jaime Reyes comes across an alien Scarab that attaches itself to the young teenager and gives him the ability to create any weapon that he could think of. With these newfound powers, Jaime goes up against the villainous Victoria Kord, played by Susan Sarandon.

Blue Beetle arrives on August 18.
