Henry Golding, the breakout star for last summers fan-favorite romantic comedy, Crazy Rich Asians; will reportedly be taking on the role of Snake Eyes in the new G.I. Joe spinoff film.
Despite their last two attempts at films (which are fun, but perhaps for the wrong reasons), The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Golding will tackle the role along with writers Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol) have been brought on to create an ensemble movie, to be released after the first film in this rebooted G.I. Joe Universe, a spin-off centered around fan-favorite character Snake Eyes coming out next year.
Snake Eyes was last portrayed by Ray Park in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009) and G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013). The Rise of Cobra received fairly positive reviews and reached number 1 at the box office… grossing over $302 million worldwide by the end of its run. Retaliation had a bit of a harder time landing with critics but still managed to rack in over $378 million worldwide.
Paramount and Hasbro want to start over with a clean slate as they look to refresh all of their toy-based properties, from Transformers (with Bumblebee, which was arguably the best of the live-action films), to exploring uncharted waters with new films based on Micronauts, M.A.S.K., and ROM: Space Knight. Now, we can add G.I. Joe to their slate.
No other details have been revealed outside of the script supposedly featuring the character Chuckles as one of the leads. It’ll certainly be interesting to see what they have in store for not only G.I. Joe, but all of the Hasbro-based films! No word, however, as to whether or not any of these films will still be interconnected as part of an “Allspark Cinematic Universe”.
