As Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 continues to be a phenomenal success, the game landed another feather in the cap with an official The Game Awards nomination for the Game of the Year title. Insomniac Games aren’t dwelling on the success for too long, however, as the focus now shifts to the next title in line from the studio, Marvel’s Wolverine.

The game is rumored to be released by 2025 with a much darker and more violent tone that befits Wolverine’s character. It’s never a bad idea to predict the storyline that might get chosen for the game and Wolverine has had some brilliant comic book stories, and these are some of the most fan-favored Wolverine story arcs.

Wolverine by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller, Set in Japan

The 1982 Wolverine comic by Frank Miller could offer a good origin story for Marvel's Wolverine.

The four-part Wolverine miniseries written by Chris Claremont and illustrated by Frank Miller was released back in 1982. The 2013 movie, The Wolverine was loosely based on the comic. The plot revolves around Wolverine’s time in Japan and features the Yakuza alongside the main antagonists, a ninja organization named The Hand.

Among the several solo exploits of Wolverine, this could be the most perfect story arc for Insomniac to take inspiration from for the upcoming gaming title. The comic offers a Japanese setting, samurai action, and a plethora of characters to choose from who can be made playable in the game the way it was done in Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise.

The samurai route opens up a whole new avenue of weapons like the Katana, and fighting techniques which can give players a lot more options to choose from, rather than just use the claws every time.

Wolverine: Enemy of the State Has an Action-Packed Storyline

Enemy of the State comics brings together a host of Marvel characters who fight Wolverine after he gets brainwashed by Hydra and the notorious gangster organization, The Hand. Wolverine fights S.H.I.E.L.D. members, the team of Fantastic Four, and Elektra in the comic. Not all of these characters could be possibly introduced in a new Wolverine game, but it could set a perfect storyline where Wolvie turns into an important ally in the fight against The Hand gangsters and Hydra members.

The story showcases Wolverine as a ruthless assassin, the story is fast-paced and has a plethora of enemies for Insomniac Games to choose from. Wolverine is literally depicted as a killing machine in the game, and this would fit just perfectly for an action-packed game where players can get to use all of Wolverine’s abilities. This could also bring the perfect opportunity for Insomniac to either feature another Marvel hero in a cameo role or for a future title tie-in.

Insomniac Games shared a teaser for Marvel’s Wolverine when the game was announced back in 2021, showing Logan sitting in a bar full of dead bodies, with Logan sitting at the bar with his whisky. There’s a name scribbled across a board that says The Princess Bar with the menu. There’s also a word in Tamil on the board that literally transliterated into “Cocktail“.

The Princess Bar is said to have first appeared in a September 1988 comic print by Chris Claremont and John Buscema titled Marvel Comics Presents #1. Marvel Comics Presents is an anthology series that ran till 1995.

The comic also notably introduced the origin of Wolverine as “Weapon X“, one of many names that the immortal hero had in the long line of comics. Weapon X storyline also revealed how Wolverine first got adamantium added to this skeleton, in issues #72–84 by Barry Windsor-Smith.

The first ten issues of the anthology featured Wolverine’s solo stories before Cyclops, Colossus, and others joined the storyline. Wolverine also featured in five other issues between #150 to #155. Insomniac Games will be looking to get the best possible start to the new franchise and they will look for the best possible source to take inspiration from. Marvel’s Wolverine is rumored to be released towards the end of next year.
