PS Plus Avatars are an exciting way to add personality to your profile. Unlike profile pictures, which can only be seen by friends, avatars are seen by everyone apart from those who come across your profile on the PlayStation Network.

Avatars can be accessed from the console’s home screen by going to the profile section. These avatars are available for the user, as Sony has disabled paid avatars. The PS Store does not house avatars anymore. If one is bored with the existing catalog of avatars on the PS device, Sony is currently offering free PS Plus Avatars as part of their Season of Play promotion.

How to Get Free PS Plus Avatars?

As mentioned, one cannot buy the avatars they like anymore. To get access to paid avatars, one must buy them on their PlayStation 4 and then use them on their profile. This seems simple, but if one doesn’t own the PS4, they can now claim five free PS5 and PS4 Avatars, thanks to Sony.

To claim the free avatars, one has to go to the PlayStation store and has to input this code:

  • Europe: 3GAA-D9L3-2G97
  • USA: DGNJ-4J45-6DQB
  • Japan: RFAH-BHAR-9K8L

The promotion for Season of Play began on December 6 and continues till January 5. The avatars offered feature artworks from some acclaimed games on the PlayStation 5. The lineup features artwork from Ghost of Tsushima’s Lord Jin Sakai playing the flute while sitting under a tree alongside a majestic fox. There is also something for Disco Elysium fans as the famous deuteragonist Kim Kitsuragi is seen striking a usual stoic pose.

Fans of Basim Ibn Ishaq from the latest Assassin’s Creed Mirage can also own a PS Plus Avatar, as it is part of the lineup. Tactical FPS enthusiasts can also grab hold of a unique avatar featuring Sledge, one of the most iconic operators from the Tactical Shooter Rainbow Six Siege.

Last but not least, there is something in store for fans of Final Fantasy VII Remake, as the protagonist, Cloud Strife, is the final addition to the avatar lineup.

It is commendable that Sony is offering avatars as part of the Season of Play promotion despite discontinuing the ability to buy them from the PS store on the PS5.

PS Plus subscribers have expressed dissatisfaction with the service by unsubscribing. This is also because the subscription certainly looks inferior compared to its rival Xbox Game Pass, which offers Day One releases of first-party titles. Having mentioned that, the numbers indicate otherwise.

The Current State of PS Plus

PlayStation Plus has more members than Xbox Game Pass.
PlayStation Plus has more members than Xbox Game Pass.

PS Plus was revamped recently by Sony when tiers were introduced. PS Plus Essential, Extra, and Premium, each with its offerings, were introduced. The Essential tier includes multiplayer gaming along with monthly titles. The current month offered: Sable (PS5), Powerwash Simulator (PS5, PS4), & Lego 2K Drive (PS5, PS4).

Also, as per the PS Plus Extra and Premium subscription model, new titles are added, and some titles leave the catalog every month. For December, the likes of these eleven titles will be exiting:

  • Yakuza 6: The Song of Life
  • Yakuza: Like a Dragon
  • Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor
  • Middle-earth: Shadow of War
  • Caladrius Blaze
  • Damascus Gear: Operation Tokyo HD Edition
  • El Hijo – A Wild West Tale
  • Foreclosed
  • Friday the 13th
  • Legends of Ethernal
  • The Escapists 2

If one subscribes to the PS Plus Extra, they can access a downloadable catalog of 400 Games. The Premium tier sees all the benefits of the previous two tiers, PS3 Game Streaming and a PS1, PS2, and PSP catalog.

A try-before-you-buy addition also includes time-bound game trials available for the users. One can argue that the lack of the Day One release and the quality of titles makes the PlayStation Plus second to the Xbox Game Pass, but that doesn’t seem accurate, as per stats.

As per GamesIndustry, PS Plus has gained over 47.7 million users. On the other hand, Game Pass only houses 21.9 million people, which is less than half of the former. While this is truly commendable, the market share for the PlayStation is significantly higher than that for the Xbox. In the end, it indeed boils down to personal preference.
