PlayStation has been the fan-favorite for gamers who love AAA gaming since Sony released its first console. The brand in the current scenario is known for its single-player exclusives, which are second to none in terms of quality.
By all means, Sony’s latest console, the PS5, has decimated the competition and outsold its arch nemesis, the Xbox Series X|S console lineup, by a 3-to-1 difference. The console is also all set to break the PS4’s record and is now in stock everywhere. However, news has broken out that the ongoing trend of layoffs in the industry has now struck the company. As per Bloomberg, the company recently laid off close to 900 employees. Across the world
PlayStation becomes the latest to be hit with layoffs
The financial, software, data, and media company Bloomberg initially broke the news on its official website. A news reporter from the company also shared a Tweet on their personal profile stating the same and sharing some details.
The tweet is as follows:
Nine hundred individuals are 8% of the company’s global workforce for ready reference. First-party PlayStation Interactive Entertainment Studios, which have recently released some fantastic titles in the market, will also be affected by layoffs.
As per the report by Bloomberg, the studio behind Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, the marquee release for the PS5 in 2023, Naughty Dog, The Last of Us, and Guerilla behind the Horizon series are some of the studios being named. Apart from the studios mentioned above, the company’s studio responsible for VR titles on the console was also shut down.
It is a shock for everyone as PlayStation and its first-party studios have done remarkably well recently, and the sales numbers were more than impressive in the previous year.
Will the layoffs at PlayStation affect upcoming games?
It is no secret that PlayStation studios won’t release exclusive titles developed at the company’s first-party studios in 2024. The news regarding the company taking a step back this calendar year was reported recently.
Since no releases are planned in the current calendar year, this should give the company enough time to bolster its workforce if needed. Having stated that, it is doubtful that games not slated to come out till 2025 will be affected by this, as sudden layoffs always affect games scheduled for release sooner.
On the other hand, the company’s VR division will most likely take a massive hit as one of the studios affected by the layoffs is responsible for VR titles on the console. So gamers who just purchased a PlayStation VR should be wary of their purchase. It goes without saying that if one were pondering upon purchasing a PSVR, right now might not be the best time.
